  • The late Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana filmed an episode of "MTV Unplugged" in New York City on November 18, 1993.
  • The front man's green cardigan, which he wore during the performance, has since become an iconic piece of the band's history.
  • Now, the garment will be sold to the highest bidder as part of an online sale from Julien's Auctions.

Nirvana fans now have a chance at purchasing an iconic piece of the band's history.

A  fuzzy green sweater worn by Kurt Cobain, Nirvana's late front man, is now being auctioned online as part of a larger sale of rock 'n' roll memorabilia. Julien's Auctions is selling the garment, which was worn by Cobain in New York City on November 18, 1993 when his band filmed an episode of "MTV Unplugged."

The starting bid for the sweater has been placed at $50,000, though the sweater is expected to sell for a price between $200,000 and $300,000.

According to the auction house, Cobain's cardigan was previously owned by Jackie Farry, a friend of the Cobain family. She also worked as a nanny to Cobain's daughter, Frances Bean.

The 16-year-old sweater is far from being in perfect condition. According to Julien's Auctions, it's missing a button, is discolored, and has a burn hole near the left pocket.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Darren Julien of Julien's Auctions said the garment has also never been washed.

"It's very important that we don't wash it," Julien told Rolling Stone. "The stains are still there. There's even cigarette burns that you can see on the sweater."

This isn't the first time one of Cobain's belongings has been sold at auction. In May 2019, Julien's Auctions sold a dirty paper plate used by Cobain for $22,400. The musician is said to have eaten pizza off the plate in 1990, and then used it to write a setlist for a Nirvana show.

During that same auction, the sweater Cobain was wearing during his last photo shoot sold for $75,000. According to Rolling Stone, Cobain wore the garment in 1993. It was later given to a friend by Cobain's wife, Courtney Love.

Delevingne seems to prefer clothes that are comfortable over styles that are trendy and uncomfortable. In September, the actress compared corsets to muzzles while speaking with Net-a-Porter.

"I had to wear a corset every day, and you lose your voice," Delevingne told Net-a-Porter about the costumes she wore while filming her new show "Carnival Row."

"I wonder, in the past, did men just sit round thinking, 'What can we do? A muzzle? Is that a bit obvious? Okay, we'll just wrap something round their waists so they can't breathe or speak,'" she said.

NOW WATCH: The US women's national team dominates soccer, but here's why the US men's team sucks

The best leather protectors you can buy

$

  • Nothing can completely prevent scuffs, scratches, and damage on leather goods, but a good leather protector can help.
  • Our top pick is the highly-rated Guardsman Protect & Preserve For Leather, which works on everything from ankle boots to car seats.

For Christmas, I received a pair of Everlane Day Boots in a limited-edition metallic color. I love these shoes, but I'm kind of afraid to wear them too often. They're super comfortable, but the leather is delicate — and did I mention limited edition?

If you, too, own precious leather goods you'd like to shield from the elements, it might be a good idea to invest in a leather protector. Most protectors come in spray or balm form and guard delicate leathers against rain, snow, liquid, or, if you are me, the wine spilled from your desk while working late into the night.

Leather protectors won't safeguard your items from all signs of wear-and-tear — abrasions, creases, and scuff marks are somewhat unavoidable — but it's an extra step you can take to ensure your leather goods age gracefully.

While leather protectors are especially useful for pieces you plan to take outside like jackets, shoes, and bags, it can't hurt to apply them to furnishings you want to keep in tip-top shape, either. And the kind of leather protector you should buy depends on the type of leather you're planning to use it on.

Here are the best leather protectors you can buy:

The best leather protector overall

The gentle Guardsman Protect & Preserve for Leather liquid keeps your leather goods looking brand-new and won't change the color or finish.

Most leather protectors are basically waterproofing sprays, but Guardsman Protect & Preserve for Leather goes above and beyond the call of duty. Massage the product onto your leather goods to protect them from the elements or to minimize signs of wear-and-tear on items you've had for a while.

Per the brand's claim, the product creates an "invisible barrier that protects against premature aging and irreversible damage from penetrating stains." You can use it on anything from clothing, shoes, cars, and furniture. The formula is pH-balanced and doesn't have a strong scent like many similar products.

Perhaps the best part is that it won't impact the color or finish of your leather items, which is a major drawback with some protectants.

One downside of this product is that it can't be used on suede or buffed leather. But Guardsman Protect & Preserve does what it claims to do, and it does it remarkably well.

Pros: Works on everything from furniture to shoes, protects and conditions, no strong smell, doesn't change finish or color of leather

Cons: Not for use on suede, nubuck, or brushed leather

The best suede protector

Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector preserves your delicate suede clothing and accessories with a quick spritz.

Suede is even more sensitive than other kinds of leather and is definitely worth protecting if you ever plan on taking it outside or wearing it around liquids. Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector is a great option for suede.

As many users have noted, this is an excellent pick for treating soft winter boots so they don't get those dreaded salt rings around the toes from walking on snow-treated sidewalks. It will also protect from liquids like water and oil without damaging the surface of the leather or suede. The spray nozzle makes for simple application — no rags or cloths required.

Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector has been featured by Insider Picks in the past, as well as WhoWhatWear, Bustle, and The Strategist

The most helpful Amazon reviewer noted that, although the product works as advertises, the nozzle can be tricky to get right.

Pros: Works on suede and nubuck, spray-on

Cons: Nozzle can be tough to use

The best leather protector for boots

The Kiwi Boot Protector is heavy-duty enough for use on hiking and work boots that get pushed to their absolute limits.

Some leather boots are already designed for serious wear-and-tear. To add an extra layer of protection to these, consider the Kiwi Boot Protector. It's specially formulated for boots, especially outdoors and work boots that will be pushed to their absolute limits.

Per the product description, it contains silicone and "bonds to leather and fabrics to create an extremely tough barrier" without drying out the materials. You can use them for other leather shoes besides hiking boots and the like, as long as you don't mind the possibility that the color or finish might change slightly.

"I've now used this on two pairs of shoes and am happy to report that they are still looking great and wicking away water! I feel like the boot protector does more than just waterproof them and actually makes them far easier to clean as well,"one Amazon shopper wrote.

Overall, the spray has a 4.2 rating on Amazon based on more than 400 reviews and is recommended by WhoWhatWear and The Strategist.

Pros: Tough silicone-based formula, works for outdoor boots & on suede

Cons: Might change color or finish of leather slightly

The best leather protector cream

The Aqua Seal Leather Waterproof Cream shields and conditions your favorite leather items so that they're as buttery soft as the day you brought them home.

If you're looking to moisturize and protect your leather goods, look no further than the Aqua Seal Leather Waterproof Cream. This is a scent-free balm that hydrates dried-out leather while shielding it from further damage.

Specifically formulated for use on hiking boots, this is a heavy-duty protectant. But don't hesitate to use it on your everyday leather goods, from ankle boots to handbags or briefcases that could use the extra moisture.

Aqua Seal is a popular expert-recommended brand for a leather protectant that has been featured by Good Housekeeping, and you really can't go wrong with anything from the range.

This is an especially good choice if you're looking for something that will moisturize and not strip the oils from your leather.

Pros: Moisturizing cream, no scent, waterproofs

Cons: Requires cloth or rag to apply

The best leather protector kit

The Apple Brand Leather Care Kit pulls double-duty as a conditioner and a cleaner.

If you want to step up your leather goods game big time, stock up on the Apple Brand Leather Care Kit. This set comes with two formulas designed to keep your favorite shoes, bags, accessories, and furnishings in mint condition.

First, apply the leather cleaner to clean off stains, scuffs, dust, and dirt. Follow it up with the leather conditioner, which "replenishes the natural oils found in leather and prevents drying, cracking, scratching, and splitting." Hello, yes!

Unfortunately, this kit isn't safe to use on suede or nubuck, but it's a godsend for other kinds of leather. The brand claims the formulations won't change the color of your leather goods, so it should be safe on lighter materials. This product doesn't waterproof like most of the others on this list, so it's best used in conjunction with a spray.

The kit has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, based on more than 400 shopper reviews, and has been featured by The Cut.

Pros: Comes with cleaner and protectant, doesn't alter leather color or finish

Cons: Not waterproof, not for nubuck or suede

Whether you love them or hate them, heeled flip flops are officially back in style.

Not only did Rihanna wear them while walking around New York City this week, but celebrities like Kim Kardashian West and Emily Ratajkowski have also donned the shoes in recent months. Now, you can even purchase heeled flip flops from retailers like ASOS and Yeezy.

Here's a closer look at the trend taking over the footwear industry.

Heeled flip flops were all the rage in the early 2000s

From Christina Aguilera to Tara Reid, heeled flip flops were everywhere at the start of the Millennium. Some stars chose shoes with small kitten heels, while others opted for sandals with a much higher platform.

What all heeled flip flops had in common, however, was the thong-style strap that crossed the front of each foot.

Rihanna started to bring the style back in 2017

During her Fenty Puma By Rihanna runway show in September 2017, Rihanna sent models on stage wearing heeled flip flops.

The black-and-green shoes feature the Puma logo, as well as a thong strap on each foot.

She later wore the style herself while walking around New York City

Rihanna stepped out wearing the shoe style on Sunday. She paired the heels with a strapless white dress and layers of diamond jewelry, creating a look that would fit perfectly in a closet from the early 2000s.

At one point during the night, she also wore a pair of narrow sunglasses that perfectly matched her outfit.

She's not the only celebrity who is fond of the trend

On June 24, Kim Kardashian West put a trendy twist on the style. She shared a photo of herself wearing sky-high flip flops — which have transparent straps and chunky gray heels — on Instagram.

Two days later, Emily Ratajkowski attended a Kérastase party in Paris, France, while wearing a strappy pair of the footwear. Her shoes feature a tan sole, thin blue heels, and orange straps that wrapped around her ankles.

She paired the heels with a glamorous minidress covered in sparkles.

More recently, Shailene Woodley stepped out in a unique pair of heeled flip flops, which stand out thanks to pointed toes and PVC panels above each heel.

She wore the shoes while attending the ICONS By Carine Roitfeld event, hosted by Harper's BAZAAR, in New York City on September 6.

Thanks to retailers like ASOS, it's now easy to try the trend yourself

At the time of this post, ASOS is selling neon-pink heeled flip flops for $48. The retailer is also selling strappy platform shoes that look similar to the ones Ratajkowski wore in June.

Jeffrey Campbell's version of the shoes is a bit simpler — they feature transparent straps and short kitten-style heels. At the time of this post, they retail for $49.95 at Nordstrom.

The best sewing machines

$

  • High-quality sewing machines are pleasant to use for long periods of time, have stitches for whatever projects you want to work on, and can handle a broad range of fabrics.
  • The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine is our top pick because it's ideal for beginners, it's inexpensive and can reach speeds of up to 1,100 stitches per minute.

With the easy accessibility of cheap clothing, linens, and other fabric products just a click away, the sewing machine has lost its once prominent place in American homes. However, for people who like completing projects on their own and reducing their consumption, sewing machines are an indispensable part of the household. Plus, these units serve as an excellent way to bond with youngsters and nurture their self-sufficiency.

For the most part, the sewing machine industry is dominated by Singer, Janome, and Brother, though there are some notable exceptions. Kenmore used to be a major player in the market, but its business has eroded under former parent company Sears.

Singer is the top brand with almost half of sewing machine sales. The company offers features and styles that are designed for all skill levels. Brother holds a quarter of the market share and focuses on balancing easy usability with advanced technology and functions for a variety of experience levels and budgets. Lastly, Janome is known for more expensive and advanced computerized machines.

The two main factors you should consider when purchasing a new sewing machine is your skill level and your budget. In our guide, we note which experience levels will benefit most from each machine, including which ones will continue to serve you well as you develop your abilities.

If you have a limited budget, you need to pay closer attention to the features and extras that you really need. For the most part, added functionality comes with a price, but there are deals to be found if you are willing to live without some accessories. For example, some of the more affordable units don't come with carrying cases and have limited stitch options. This might be fine if you have a dedicated space for your machine and are not interested in monogramming or embroidery.

While researching the best sewing machines, we read through hundreds of buyer and expert ratings and reviews of dozens of models. Our guide features machines that have a track record or performance, durability, and versatility.

The best sewing machine overall

The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine is designed with the beginner in mind with its intuitive interface, ability to handle all types of fabrics, and one-step buttonholes.

The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machineonly has 23 stitches — 6 basic, 12 decorative, 4 stretch, and a 1-step buttonhole — but it's a workhorse with its heavy-duty mechanical design.

It has the ability to make 1,100 stitches per minute so you can complete your projects faster. The top drop-in bobbin is easy to insert, and the clear cover allows you to monitor how much thread is left. The built-in needle threader is also convenient for effortless threading with minimal frustration.

The kit comes with a soft-sided dust cover, auxiliary spool pin, spool pin felt, screwdriver, bobbins, needles, quilting guide, seam ripper/lint brush, and all-purpose, zipper, buttonhole, and button sewing feet.

Wirecutter recommends the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machinefor beginners and casual sewers because it's affordable, can handle an array of fabrics, and is easy to use. It found that a beginner could sit down and use this machine without spending much time reading the manual. It also makes excellent buttonholes perfectly sized for your button. However, the reviewer points out that there only appear to be two speeds, fast and slow. And, the machine gets quite noisy.

Sew Orbit and Best Sewing Machine for Beginners Today blogs also recommend this machine.

More than 2,700 Amazon buyers posted positive reviews of the Singer Heavy Duty 4423 Sewing Machine. One customer, at first, initiated a return because he had trouble getting the thread tension right and experienced countless bobbin jams, even though he watched several video tutorials. After some more research, he learned that it works well when he uses the felt bobbin spacer, only uses plastic bobbins, and threads it correctly.

Other buyers were impressed with how durable this machine feels and how it can handle heavy-duty fabrics, such as leather and vinyl.

Pros: Achieves up to 1,100 stitches per minutes, handles heavy-duty fabrics, easy to use, makes great buttonholes, affordable

Cons: Only two speeds and 23 stitches

The best computerized sewing machine

If you are looking for a sewing machine that will keep pace with your improving abilities, the Janome 7330 Magnolia Computerized Sewing Machine is a smart choice with its computerized stitch selection and durable design.

The Janome 7330 Magnolia Computerized Sewing Machine features a small backlit LCD screen that lets you choose from 30 stitches, including 6 one-step buttonholes. Using the touch buttons, you can also see what stitch length and width you've selected. There are convenient buttons for tying off the end of the thread, reversing direction, and starting/stopping.

This machine comes as part of six different kits, and the price is currently the same for all of them. So, before buying, take a moment to find the kit that is best for your needs. For instance, I would recommend going with one of the bundles that has a tote case if you plan on moving your 7330 around regularly.

The Janome 7330 is one of the most highly rated machines on the comprehensive expert site Erin Says Sew. The reviewer appreciates that the bobbin is jam-proof and top-loading. Also, she was impressed with how one can start and stop sewing with the push of a button, rather than relying exclusively on the foot pedal. However, she would have preferred more decorative stitches, a dust cover, and adjustable presser foot pressure.

Grandma Likes to Sew found that this is a terrific unit for sewers of all levels. The reviewer liked the superior stitch-work and how durable and reliable the 7330 is.

About 87% of the people who reviewed the Janome 7330 on Amazon gave it a positive rating (4 or 5 stars). One user said the machine runs quietly, can handle several layers of heavy fabric, and has automatic button sewing. Yet, after five years of use, she was only able to figure out how to use the buttonholer attachment after stumbling upon a YouTube tutorial.

Another buyer commented that she uses the machine on a daily basis, and the 7330 was instrumental in her starting a sewing blog and hobby business.

Pros: Useful for sewers of any skill level, runs quietly, durable, automatic button sewing

Cons: Only 30 stitches

The best quilting sewing machine

The Brother CS6000i Sewing and Quilting Machine comes with a variety of extras that make quilting convenient, including an oversized table attachment.

What makes the Brother CS6000i Sewing and Quilting Machinespecial is the extras and the number of stitches it can handle.

First of all, the oversized table attachment is designed for quilting and other larger projects. There are also eight quilting feet to choose from. You can store your CS6000i in the included hard protective case. There are 60 stitches to choose from on the LCD screen, including 7 buttonholes. Brother backs the quality of this unit with a 25-year limited warranty.

On the sewing blogs, Grandma Likes to Sew recommends this unit as one of the best values for your money. The reviewer noted that the auto-threading, pedal-free sewing, and speed control were easy enough for beginners to use. Sewing from Home suggests buying the CS6000i for quilting projects because the foot holder quilt guide, wide table, and the spring-action quilting foot all lent themselves well to quilting projects.

There are more than 5,900 5-star reviews of the Brother CS6000i on Amazon. Numerous of them use this model for making apparel, handbags, accessories, and other projects as part of their sewing business.

Many buyers were impressed with the number of stitch options they get with such an affordable machine. Another popular feature is the effortless threading of the bobbin and needle. The only common complaint was that the highest speed is not particularly fast.

Pros: 60 stitches, comes with a wide table attachment, easy threading of the needle and bobbin, 25-year limited warranty

Cons: Some complaints about the tension

The best luxury sewing machine

If you are an experienced sewer who needs a unit for daily use and you have a little extra money to spend, the Janome DC5100 Computerized Sewing Machine is your best bet.

The Janome DC5100 Computerized Sewing Machineis great because it has 167 stitches that you can select and edit on the control panel. Among the stitches are five one-step buttonholes and every letter of the alphabet.

This computerized machine also has enough memory to store up to 50 patterns so you can easily duplicate a project. The kit comes with 11 presser feet, extra needles and bobbins, and a carrying case with a handle so you will have everything you need to get started out of the box. You just need to buy some thread.

Wirecutter recommends the Janome DC5100 as the best sewing machine for intermediate sewers. The reviewer found that it can handle everything from delicate clothing projects to heavy curtains and quilts.

Of the dozens of units that the Erin Says Sew blog tested, this machine is one of only three to receive a perfect 5-star rating. She recommends this unit because she found the motor to be incredibly powerful and the array of stitches to be unique and helpful. The only negative she noted is that there is only one font for monogramming, and it isn't particularly exciting.

One Amazon buyer noted that she is able to use the DC5100 while her baby is sleeping, whereas her old machine would inevitably wake the baby up. The main complaint is that the letters are somewhat sloppy looking.

Pros: 167 stitches, powerful motor, handles a broad array of fabrics, well-written user manual

Cons: Expensive, unimpressive and non-adjustable font

The best portable sewing machine

The Brother HC1850 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine only weighs about 10 pounds, which makes it ideal for bringing along to sewing circles and classes.

For its price, the Brother HC1850 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine has an impressive selection of features. You can use this unit to monogram letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and even some non-standard characters. The stitches include 8 auto-buttonhole styles, 12 heirloom stitches, 94 decorative stitches, 14 quilting stitches, and 42 garment construction stitches.

Like the Brother CS6000i, the HC1850 is great for quilting and comes with a spring-action quilting foot, detachable wide table, and the ability to do free-motion quilting. Plus, the kit includes bobbins, needles, spool caps, a seam ripper, instructional DVD, eight presser feet, and more.

Quilter's Review recommended this unit because it balances affordability and features quite nicely. The reviewer was impressed with how simple it is to thread the needle, but she warned against using it for serious quilting because of the small neck and the presser feet don't rise enough for thicker quilts.

Approximately 83% of the people who reviewed the Brother HC1850 on Amazon gave it 4 or 5 stars. One buyer wrote that it's her third sewing machine and her favorite. She uses it for embroideries, quilting, and sewing. She is disabled and found it fits her needs thanks to the foot pedal-free use and light weight.

Another experienced sewer was impressed with the embroidery stitches this unit produces. The biggest complaint is with the 25-year warranty, which buyers found misleading. One buyer was disappointed when hers stopped working after a year and Brother would not replace it.

Pros: Only weighs about 10 pounds, 130 built-in stitches, comes with an instructional DVD

Cons: Runs slow, misleading warranty, doesn't come with a case or cover

The best men's undershirts you can buy

$

  • If you've been looking for the best undershirt for managing your sweaty pits, then the search is over.
  • The American-made Thompson Tee features a unique and effective "sweat guard" design that makes it the best undershirt you can buy for protecting your nice shirts from unsightly perspiration.

If you regularly wear button-up shirts, then good undershirts are a must. Wearing an undershirt is one of the best ways to maintain and protect your nice shirts, particularly your dress shirts, from sweat and deodorant, which can discolor the fabric and wear it out over time. By creating a barrier between your sweat and the underarms of your button-up, undershirts also help to ward off the dreaded "wet pits" look.

Unfortunately, like many other everyday clothing items, a lot of guys treat undershirts as an after-thought. If you're looking for a better way to stay comfortable and protect your nice shirts, then you've found the right place. Before we get into our picks, however, here are some quick guidelines to follow when selecting an undershirt that's right for you:

  • Keep it fitted. Your dress shirts should be trim, not baggy and blousy, and so it stands to reason that you don't want big, billowy undershirts, either. Many brands today are offering slimmer modern cuts for their clothing, and undershirts are no exception. Go with something more tailored or even opt for snug-fitting stretch undershirts which hug your torso like a glove.
  • Avoid white. White is probably the most common color for undershirts. It's also probably the worst. We've all seen it: The guy wearing a white or blue dress shirt with his white undershirt sleeves shining through like the sun. This is because white is a high contrast color that shows up very easily under other materials. Play it safe and keep it gray. This low-contrast shade will blend in much more easily so you're not getting those unsightly "undershirt lines" under your dress shirt sleeves.
  • Go with a V-neck. People have a lot of opinions about men sporting V-necks for casual wear, but for undershirts, it's pretty much a requirement – especially if you're going sans necktie, which you'll probably do fairly often. Having the top your undershirt peeking out behind your dress shirt collar screams "my mom made me wear a button-up shirt today," but a V-neck cut keeps it nicely out of view below the neckline. If you already have a bunch of crew-neck undershirts, relegate them to casual wear or toss 'em.

Keeping these guidelines in mind, we've done the research and smoked out the best undershirts for men that you can buy today. Undershirts are fairly straightforward pieces of clothing, but we've made sure that our top picks cover a range of different styles, fabrics, and price points so you can find the right one for your tastes and budget.

Here are the best men's undershirts you can buy:

Updated on 10/18/19 by Caitlin Petreycik. Updated prices, links, and formatting.

The best men's undershirt overall

With soft and breathable natural fabric, a trim cut, an under-arm sweat guard, and all-American construction, the Thompson Tee V-neck is the last undershirt you'll ever need to buy.

Arguably the main reason to wear an undershirt is to prevent your sweaty pits from showing through your nice button-up shirt by putting a layer between your skin and your clothing. Managing sweat while looking nice is an ever-present challenge in the summer (especially in a suit), but even in the cooler months, your body can get pretty warm when you're indoors wearing long-sleeved shirts and suit jackets.

If this is a particularly big problem for you, then even a normal undershirt may not be enough. Enter the sweat guard from Thompson Tee. Its unique design is purpose-built to target the biggest problem area for perspiration, the under-arms, with a second layer that serves as a "sweat pad" to put some more material and distance between your skin and your nice shirt.

The trim cut is form-fitting and long enough to tuck, too, while the V-neck is suitably deep so it won't be peeking out from under your shirt collar.

Another thing we like about the Thompson Tee is that it's woven of soft combed cotton, with the under-arm "sweat pads" made of bamboo-derived rayon with a touch of spandex for stretch and flexibility. This is a plus, as natural fibers like cotton will almost always breathe better than synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon.

Even better, the Thompson Tee is 100 percent made in the United States. You'll pay for it, though. The Thompson Tee undershirt rings in at around $30 on Amazon, but it's worth it. If sweat is a problem and you're looking for the "holy grail" of undershirts, then this is probably the last one you'll ever need to buy.

Pros: Made in America, woven of soft combed cotton with a bamboo-derived rayon sweat guard, the unique design is highly effective at managing under-arm sweat, it's got a great form-fitting cut

Cons: It's fairly expensive

The best men's undershirt multi-pack

If our other picks cause sticker shock, these soft, lightweight, no-nonsense undershirts from David Archy are an excellent and super-affordable alternative.

One of the general rules of menswear is to avoid synthetic fabrics. While this is good advice, it mostly applies to larger, nicer outer garments such as shirts, slacks, business suits, sweaters, and so on. For clothing items like these, synthetics are typically used to cut costs rather than for any particular qualities.

Although synthetic fabrics have a bad rap in the menswear scene, they do confer some advantages for certain pieces of clothing. Synthetics are durable, they dry quickly, and they're useful for garments where you want some stretch such as socks or athletic wear.

Modal in particular is a semi-synthetic fabric well-known for its softness and elasticity. Modal is actually a form of rayon, which is made from cellulose in contrast to more common polymer-based synthetics like nylon. It's also more breathable, with these characteristics combining to make it the perfect candidate for undershirts like these ones from David Archy.

David Archy undershirts are made of a soft micro-modal fabric with a touch of elastane. Micro-modal is silkier than plain modal fibers — it's even softer to the touch than cotton — and offers moisture-wicking properties that manage sweat and let it dry quickly instead of soaking up moisture. It's thin and light without being transparent, although it's best to tumble dry these and then hang them up damp to air-dry rather than drying them with heat.

The V-neck is suitably deep and the David Archy shirts are slimmer than most other multi-pack undershirts from popular brands like Hanes, the cuts of which tend to be a bit boxier than most, but these undershirts don't have much of a taper in the body. You may want to consider sizing down if you're between sizes. The sleeves are also nice and slim-fitting so you don't get a bunch of material bunching up around your arms under your dress shirt.

Pros: Made of a breathable and soft micro-modal fabric, the cut is fitted and long enough to stay tucked, and they're a solid value

Cons: The fit is nothing special, and the micro-modal shouldn't be put in a hot dryer cycle

The best men's undershirt that you can wear casually

J. Crew's knack for classic yet modern style, great quality, and nice materials makes this heather gray V-neck T-shirt perfect for doing double-duty as an undershirt and a casual tee.

Undershirts are typically specifically designed to be worn under a collared shirt, but they're still essentially just tees. This means that, so long as it's styled right, there's no reason you can't pop on an "undershirt" with a pair of jeans for a simple casual outfit — and if you're the type that doesn't like to own a mountain of clothes, then a few good tees that can do double-duty as undershirts are nice to have in your closet.

As one of the premier brands of casual men's style, it should come as no surprise that J. Crew made it into our list. If Brooks Brothers is the king of American preppy style, then J. Crew might be the king of American casual, with its wide lineup of clothes that perfectly thread the needle between modern and classic styling.

This heather gray V-neck tee lives up to J. Crew's simple-yet-stylish design ethos. It features a tailored cut that's not baggy or restricting. It's slim enough for an undershirt and it's made of soft combed cotton.

The V-neck is deep enough that you can safely undo a button on your collared shirt, but it's not cut too low to be suitable for casual wear. It's a no-nonsense, well-made, nicely-styled staple tee that'll get a lot of play in your rotation whether you're wearing it under a dress shirt or just pairing it with jeans or chinos.

The J. Crew heather grey V-neck T-shirt rings in at around $25, which may seem slightly pricey for a single undershirt. But given that this soft and versatile shirt can also serve as one of your everyday casual tees, it's not a bad value. J. Crew regularly runs sales and offers promo codes, too, so wait for a discount and order a couple to score them even cheaper.

Pros: It's made of soft and durable combed cotton, the fit is slim enough for both casual and undershirt wear without being restricting, the V-neck is sufficiently deep for wearing under a collared shirt without being too low to wear by itself, and it's a good value (especially when on sale)

Cons: It's cut shorter in the body than dedicated undershirts

The best suits you can buy

For your go-to workhorse suit, you simply can't beat a single-breasted, two-button classic style charcoal gray suit. The Brooks Brothers 1818 charcoal suit combines historic American-made quality with iconic English flair, and it's easily the most versatile suit you'll ever wear.

The best women's work bags you can buy

  • Work bags often pull double duty — they need to be cute and useful with great organization and enough space to hold all the things you need during the day.
  • Our top pick is the Dagne Dover Classic Tote because it moves seamlessly between roles thanks to a sleek coated canvas exterior and compartment-filled interior.

No matter how hard I try, I always seem to become the person who carries three bags to work. I've just never found one bag that does it all — holds my laptop, commuter book, and personal items while looking cute enough not to ruin my outfit. As a result, I usually pack a "normal" bag that matches my look and a canvas tote bag for additional functionality.

It's not the best method for my street style photo opportunities or for my spinal alignment. I've always been jealous of those women I see on the subway carrying a single chic satchel or sporty-cool backpack. But thanks to a recent uptick of brands specializing in affordable leather goods and sharp staples, the options for stylish work bags are getting better all the time.

Brands like Dagne Dover, Senreve, and Everlane are changing the game and making it easier than ever to find everyday bags that look good and hold a lot of stuff. Say goodbye to your canvas tote collection with these five working woman-approved carryalls.

Here are the best work bags for women:

Updated on 10/18/19 by Caitlin Petreycik. Updated prices, links, and formatting.

The best work bag overall

The Dagne Dover Classic Tote packs a ton of features in a slim, compact space so you can carry your entire life in the bag and no one will be the wiser.

Most tote bags, even if they are large enough to get you through a work day, tend to swallow half your stuff. I have several huge bags, but they're all pretty unstructured, making it hard to find smaller items inside.

The Dagne Dover Classic Tote is designed to combat this exact problem.

This bag has so many specialized pockets that you get a clown car effect when you look inside. The Classic Tote has a neoprene water bottle sleeve, a phone pocket, pen holder, padded laptop sleeve, notebook or tablet sleeve with magnetic closure, and interior side pocket. There's also a detachable key holder to prevent the tote from eating your key ring while you're trying to unlock the front door.

The Classic Tote has a durable coated canvas exterior with leather trim and comes in six very classic shades that will go with everything in your wardrobe. It truly is the ideal grab-and-go bag for everyday use.

Dagne Dover's praises have been sung all over the internet, and this bag and its larger counterpart, the Legend Tote, come recommended by Harper's Bazaar, The Strategist, Best Products, and our Insider Picks editor Ellen Hoffman. We also love the brand's leather Allyn Tote, though it costs more.

Pros: Beautiful design, tons of interior pockets formatted for different uses, detachable key chain, comes in six versatile colors, good value for the price

Cons:  None

The best work bag for less than $200

Looking to make less of an investment? The Everlane Day Market Tote is a premium quality leather work bag with a sub-$200 price tag that won't hurt your wallet.

A handbag doesn't have to be exciting to be special. In fact, I think the best work bags are simple enough to go with any outfit. The Everlane Day Market Tote is the kind of bag you can leave packed Monday through Friday‚ and maybe even Saturday and Sunday, too — without a second thought about whether it will clash with your ensemble.

The simple, no-fuss silhouette lends itself to daily use, and the sturdy 100% Italian leather exterior will look great for years to come. While the Day Market Tote lacks the jigsaw puzzle of pockets you get with Dagne Dover's Classic Tote, you can certainly still pack everything you need for a full day of activity — including a laptop — in this bag with room to spare.

This bag is a major hit with shoppers. It has well over 1,000 reviews and a 4.7-star rating on Everlane's website. Best Products, Harper's Bazaar, The Strategist, and The Cut have all featured the Day Market Tote. Our Insider Picks team loves it, too.

As far as downsides go, there aren't many, especially for the price. But keep in mind that the bag is unlined, doesn't have a closure, and only features one small pocket inside.

Pros: Affordable, 100% Italian leather, roomy size

Cons: Only one interior pocket

The best convertible work bag

Can't decide between a backpack, tote, satchel, or crossbody? The Senreve Maestra Bag is all of the above in a gorgeous and functional package.

If you're really serious about investing in The Ultimate Work Bag — a bag that can be everything at once, forever — consider the Senreve Maestra. Yes, that bag. The one that every blogger and their mom seems to be wearing on Instagram.

The Senreve Maestra stands out in part because it's just plain cool. It has an angular silhouette with a belt-style detail down the front and geometric seams in the leather. Despite its fashion-forward design, the Maestra is timeless. It's not going to look dated in a year or two, which is great news because it is by far the priciest option on this list.

But functionality is the real selling point here. The Maestra is designed to withstand the wear-and-tear of daily use with stain- and water-resistant leather. It comes in three sizes, and the largest one has a whopping seven interior pockets, as well as an exterior pocket on the outside. And, yes, you can fit your laptop inside.

Perhaps the coolest thing about this bag is that it converts into four different styles, so you no longer need to choose between a backpack, crossbody, satchel, or tote.

Insider Picks editor Sally Kaplan couldn't say enough good things about the Senreve Maestra in her review, and she's not the only one — writers as Purse Blog, Olivia Janette, Man Repeller, and Travel + Leisure say it's worth the price, too.

Pros: Comes in three sizes, convertible straps, up to eight pockets

Cons: Expensive

The best day-to-night work bag

Leatherology is known for affordable yet beautiful leather goods that fit all your life needs, and the Belmont Structured Tote comes with a wristlet, making it the perfect day-to-night option.

The concept of "day-to-night" dressing is a little bit overstated, I think, considering when I worked in an office I usually just wore the exact same outfit — accessories included — to my any after-hours activities. But in the event that you really need to ditch the heavy tote for your post-5 p.m. plans, there's always the wristlet-in-your-bag option.

Leatherology's Belmont Structured Tote is a roomy work-friendly bag with plenty of storage space (though limited pockets). It also comes with a detachable wristlet large enough to hold your phone, cash, and keys for a quick getaway. The perfect two-in-one!

The Belmont tote is available in several neutral colors with contrasting interior leather for added stylistic interest (accompanying wristlets coordinate with the exterior shade). Made of scratch- and water-resistant Italian leather, the bags are easily cleaned.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton has spoken highly of Leatherology, and the company has also received the praises of Forbes and Fast Company.

Pros: Quality durable leather at an affordable price, customizable, spacious, comes with match wristlet

Cons: Only one small zippered pocket

How Sperry boat shoes are made

$

The Following is a transcript of the video.

- The Sperry boat shoe is synonymous with preps and WASPS. But it's made its way onto the feet of celebrities and onto the red carpet. It's a classic American shoe. The boat shoes were, no surprise, originally intended for sailors and those who work on boats. But now it seems as if everyone, at some point in their life, has owned a pair. The shoes are recognizable for their soft leather, white stitching, and laces that weave around the shoe's opening. And making each individual shoe requires the special skills of the artisans who stitch together the iconic footwear by hand. We got a look at how Sperry's boat shoes are made.

First, leather is selected and cut on a machine into the different pieces that will later make up the main parts of the shoe. According to Rancourt & Co., the factory where Sperrys are made, each piece of leather is inspected, and sometimes leather is discarded if not up to Sperry standards. Holes get punched into the leather, eyelets are added, and rawhide leather laces are intertwined. Rawhide is a type of leather that is more pliable than others. It can be bent in different directions, which makes it a great option to be laced around the boat shoes. Once the leather parts are cut out, the upper pieces of the shoe are stitched together by a sewing machine. Soaking the upper pieces in water is the next important step, as this helps make the leather more pliable.

The pieces are then pulled with pinchers over a last, which is the shoe form, and held into place with shoe tacks. The top and the bottom pieces are now hand-stitched together. The artisan uses an awl to punch the holes, and, using two needles, threads then fastens them.

After being hand-sewn together, and still on the last, the shoe has a little bit of moisture to it, so it's dried for about three hours. After the three hours, the pieces stay on the last for another 24 hours as they continue to dry and take the shape of a shoe. Once the drying process is complete, the leather midsole is attached with a machine specifically used for this step of the process. The rubber outsole is pre-glued and attached to the midsole through a heat-activation process. Once the rubber sole is attached, the edges are rough, so they need to be trimmed to make them evenly round and smooth. This is done with a smoothing machine.

The last is finally taken out of the shoe. The leather sock liner in the bottom of the shoe is now glued in.

  • Wristwatches are a fun fashion accessory, and the choices are nearly endless.
  • Keeping in mind style, durability, and size, we did the research and rounded up the best under-$200 options on the internet.
  • The Fossil Jacqueline watch is our top pick because the look of it makes it a great everyday accessory that will add a touch of sophistication to your wardrobe for a budget-friendly friendly price.

Smartwatches and high-tech fitness trackers are gaining in popularity, but there's something to be said about the humble analog watch. Truth be told, there are plenty of traditional watches out there that aren't all that humble in terms of price or style.

Whether you want a timeless and understated look or you want to make a statement, there are plenty of watches to choose from — and that's where the challenge arises.

There is an overwhelming number of women's watches to choose from in terms of both style and brand. We realize time is of the essence (both literally and figuratively) so we've scoured the reviews and done the research for you to find five different watches that look good, but won't have you maxing out your credit card.

All our picks for this guide come in at $150 or less, but even though they are budget-friendly, you won't be sacrificing quality with these watches.

Here the best watches for women under $200 you can buy:

Updated on 10/21/2019 by Mara Leighton: Updated prices and formatting. We are currently testing new products, so we'll update this guide soon.

The best watch overall

The Fossil Jacqueline watch is a classic go-to for everyday wear that can be dressed up or down.

The Fossil Jacqueline watch has a classic Roman numeral watch face, a simple yet comfortable leather band, and a variety of neutral color combos to choose from making it the best watch for everyday wear. The dial of the watch face is subtly textured and keeps time with three hands and Roman numerals. A small window on the bottom of the dial will also tell you what day of the month it is.

The medium case measures 36mm, but the slim band keeps it from looking overly bulky, so it's an ideal watch no matter your wrist size. It also comes in a wide range of colors, including silver and blackrose gold and navy, silver with pink, silver with brown, or rose gold with pink, so you can match it to the type of jewelry you wear and the colors you like best.

Though this watch is described as having a classic style, in this case, the word "classic" shouldn't be misunderstood as "old-fashioned." The Jacqueline has been designed with a modern aesthetic kept in mind.  If you want a watch that you can wear almost daily because it is versatile enough to be dressed up or down, this watch won't fail you.

I personally own this watch and find myself reaching for it often — especially when I want to pull together an outfit. It stands out just enough to get a compliment here and there, but it isn't trying to win any trend-setting awards. While there's certainly a place for fashion-forward accessories, it's also nice to have the daily wardrobe staples. Think of this watch as the little black dress of your accessory collection. It's a classic piece that won't be going out of style anytime soon, and it's almost always guaranteed to look good.

Durability and comfort are especially important in the watch you wear every day. Fossil is known for producing affordable, high-quality watches and other accessories, so have no fear about this watch's durability. It keeps time accurately with a quartz movement. The leather strap is comfortable, and it's compatible with any other 14 mm strap from Fossil if you want to switch it out.

It's also rated at 3 ATM for water resistance, so it will withstand splashes and brief submersion in water. It gave me some peace of mind that if I were to accidentally splash water on it while washing my hands, it wouldn't mean the end of this timepiece.

Overall, the Jacqueline has received positive reviews from buyers. Many dubbed it the "perfect every day watch" and say that "it looks elegant without being bulky" thanks to the slim band that accompanies the larger face.

Some buyers with smaller wrists (including myself) did notice that the watch has a tendency to slip around. A slightly shorter band option for this would be ideal, but I found that when I have the strap adjusted to its smallest circumference, it minimizes most of the slippage. For me, this wasn't inconvenient enough to take away from the many positives the Jacqueline has to offer. Its classic look and modern charm make it an accessory piece you'll be able to count on, even as style trends come and go.

Pros: Versatile enough to dress up and down, comfortable band, durable construction, comes in multiple color options, displays the day of the month

Cons: Tends to slip around on smaller wrists

The best fashion statement watch

The cute details of the Kate Spade New York 5 O'Clock Metro watch will add a touch of whimsy to any outfit.

Fashion watches come in all sorts of styles, but Kate Spade has mastered the art of creating a watch that makes just enough of a fashion statement without being too over the top. The thoughtful little details present in the 5 O'clock Metro watch are a perfect example of that design aesthetic.

The watch takes inspiration from New York City because Kate Spade has its roots in the city that never sleeps. Whether you're the type who looks forward to happy hour with your friends and co-workers, or you prefer to unwind with your pajama pants and a glass of wine, you'll still be able to appreciate the "It's 5 o'clock Somewhere" sentiment of this watch.

The charming details of the 5 O'Clock Metro watch make it a great accessory if you're looking for a little something extra to add to your outfit. The face has "somewhere…" in script, and a martini glass is cleverly placed at the 5 o'clock mark. The spade symbol, which is synonymous with the Kate Spade brand, is at the 12 o'clock mark. As a final touch, the second hand is covered with a striped design in some models.

It may be cute, but this watch is still functional and durable, featuring a leather band. The rest of the dial is marked with Arabic numerals and is easy to read, and the time stays accurate thanks to the quartz movement. This watch is water-resistant to withstand splashes and brief submersion, but you won't want to swim or bathe with it.

Along with the whimsical details on the watch face, the thoughtful design continues with other color themes and designs, like the gold with white model available on Amazon and the blue and rose gold available on Nordstrom, so you can find something that best suits your personal style and your wardrobe. The case measures 34mm across, putting it in the medium-sized category.

Overall, buyers love the whimsical details and were happy with both the quality and the functionality. Some reviewers did complain that the leather strap felt a bit rough and stiff at first but loved everything else about the watch. Though this watch may not be as versatile as some, it makes just enough of a fashion statement and will add some fun to your everyday ensemble at a far more affordable price than most luxury fashion watches. Cheers to that!

Pros: Fun details, accurate timekeeping, durable design, water-resistant

Cons: Some reviewers thought the band was too stiff

The best boyfriend-style watch

Wristology adds feminine appeal to a boyfriend watch that can be dressed up or down and offers style and functionality for an extremely affordable price.

The Olivia Rose Gold Scalloped Boyfriend watch is all about style. While some boyfriend watches go the tomboy route with bulky features and a sportier look, the Olivia does the opposite. It features scalloped detailing on the outside of a watch face that has no numbers or indices which give it a sleek, modern appeal.

Unlike many fashion watches, this watch also comes in under $50 — an affordable price for a watch that looks more expensive than it is thanks to the thoughtful design. Versatility is another winning point here that will allow you to make the most of an already affordable timepiece. This is the type of watch that can be dressed up or down, going from casual weekend wear to the office or a night out.

It should be noted that if you have an especially petite wrist, you may find the 38mm case a little on the large side. However, if you want an accessory that will make a statement, and you want your watch to be one of the main focuses of your outfit, you won't be disappointed with the Olivia.

Since the dial of the watch doesn't feature any time indicators, some may find it a little trickier to quickly read this watch. The scalloped pattern does correspond with where the numbers would be to make it possible to still read the time, which is kept with quartz movement for accuracy.

The Olivia doesn't skimp on durability either, which is a plus since this is meant to be a watch you can wear daily. The watch band is made of leather (some styles come with a patent leather band) for added durability, and the band can also be easily switched out for any other Wristology 18mm band, adding to its versatile nature. The Olivia also comes in multiple color options to go along with the rose gold case, including rose gold and grayrose gold with black, rose gold with wine.

It's rated at 3 ATM for water resistance, meaning it can withstand splashes and brief submersion in water. However, like the other watches on this list, it isn't meant to be worn while swimming or bathing. If anything does happen to your watch, it comes with a two-year warranty.

Most buyers were happy with their purchase of this watch, but some did note that the ticking was louder than they'd prefer, and some buyers with petite wrists wished the band were smaller. Otherwise, most loved its versatility, the clean and simple design, and its reasonable price.

If you want to add a stylish accessory to your collection without going over budget, or you plan on having more than one watch in your collection, this is an affordable way to give yourself options. The Olivia makes a fashion statement, but won't make you cringe the next time you look at your bank statement. You can also check out Wristology's other watches.

Pros: Feminine design, durable construction, can be dressed up or down, interchangeable watch band, water resistant, affordable

Cons: Lack of indices or numbers could make it harder to tell the time, some with petite wrists may find it too bulky, some reviewers thought the ticking was too loud

The best watch for a modern look

The Mondaine Classic watch takes its inspiration from the Official Swiss Railways Clock, with its accurate timekeeping and distinct red second hand.

Mondaine is a Swiss watch company known for its expertly designed, high-quality watches. The inspiration comes from the Official Swiss Railways Clock, designed by Swiss engineer and designer Hans Hilfiker in 1944. This clock became the icon of the Federal Swiss Railways, which were known for their punctuality.

In 1986, the Mondaine Watch Company took the blueprint from the clock, and applied it to its watch collection. The Mondaine Classic watch showcases the simplicity of the Swiss Railways Clock, but also has a modern look and feel that translates well into everyday wear.

The iconic red paddle style second hand gives it a fun pop of color, as does the red underside of the black leather band. If you're looking for a unique timepiece to add to your accessories collection that will still go with most your wardrobe, the Mondaine Classic is a good choice.

Those with petite wrists will appreciate the 30mm case diameter. The dial features black indices to mark the time, and the two bold minute and hour hands are complemented by the red second hand. All of this is set against a white background for easy reading. The stainless-steel case, durable mineral crystal used to cover the watch face, and the leather band make for a watch that's meant to stand the test of time.

When it comes to actually telling the time, you can count on the Mondaine for accuracy as well, thanks to the Swiss Quartz movement. The Mondaine is also water-resistant, so it will withstand splashes of water and it will be safe if you get caught in the rain, but it isn't meant to be submerged in water for any length of time. In the case of any manufacturing defects, Mondaine offers a 2-year warranty.

The minimalistic design and elegance of the Mondaine Classic, as well as its accurate timekeeping is a hit with most buyers. Reviewer Liz loved the versatility it offers as well, commenting that the red color on the underside of the band "makes the watch very unique to the wearer, but also very conservative and suitable for all occasions and outfits."

The only caveat that could be found while reading the reviews was some buyers didn't care for having the Mondaine logo on the front of the watch. This could be considered a downside, especially since the highlight of this watch is the thoughtfully designed watch face, but it's also not uncommon — most watches do feature their logo here.

If you're looking for a unique timepiece with an equally interesting backstory that is versatile enough to go with most of your outfits, the Mondaine Classic is for you.

Pros: Unique watch face design, accurate timekeeping, durable, water-resistant, can be dressed up or down

Cons: Some reviewers didn't like having the logo on the watch face

The best bracelet-style watch

For the times when you need an accessory to dress up with, the bracelet-style Fossil Virginia stainless steel watch won't let you down.

While an everyday watch that you can dress up or down is a great wardrobe staple to have, sometimes you need something specific to go with that little black dress. The Fossil Virginia watch is made for special occasions and will add some eye-catching sparkle to any outfit thanks to its crystal-set bezel, the crystal detailing on the band, and the crystal hour markers.

The Virginia comes in both rose gold and silver tones, so you'll be able to match it to the rest of your jewelry ensemble for a put-together look, and the 30mm case looks flattering on a wide range of wrist sizes.

There's more to this watch than just sparkle. It's an accurate timekeeper with quartz movement and an analog display. Roman numerals mark the 12, 3, 6, and 9 hour points and the rest are marked by the stacked crystal hour markers. This combo, along with the three-hand design, make for easy time reading.

There is no connecting leather band here as this is a bracelet style watch, but it's made of durable stainless steel with a closure to keep it securely on your wrist. This Adjust-O-Matic closure allows for self-adjustment by link removal so you'll be able to fit it to your wrist size. The Virginia is rated at 5 ATM for water resistance, so it will withstand short periods of submersion in shallow water, but it isn't meant for driving or snorkeling.

It should be noted that some buyers did have trouble finding their perfect fit with the link removable band, as they were between sizes. Others felt that the band enclosure was hard to open. Despite the challenges that some had with the band, others found the links easy to remove and adjust, and liked that the watch face didn't look too bulky on their wrists.

Its elegance and shine, high quality at an affordable price, and ability to dress up an outfit make the Virginia a chic addition to any outfit. Whether you've got a big client meeting, a formal event to attend, or it's date night with your other half — a little extra sparkle never hurts.

Pros: Elegant design, crystal detailing to dress up an outfit, durable and adjustable band, water-resistant

Cons: Some reviewers had trouble with adjusting and opening and closing the band

The best minimalist watch

MVMT makes gorgeous minimalist watches for far less than most other companies, and the Hermosa is our favorite.

If you like the look of minimalist design, you'll love MVMT's watches. The company was founded in 2013 by Jake Kassan and Kramer LaPlante, and quickly reached its crowdfunding goal on Indiegogo. Since then, it's been a favorite among budget watch buyers.

The Insider Picks team has loved MVMT watches since the start and has tested several of the brand's most popular styles. The Hermosa watch is one of our favorites with its simple all metal look and 38mm case. It has a mesh metal band that never snags on your arm hair or clothes, and its super slim profile makes it light and comfortable to wear all day.

As a former tech journalist, the only watches I've worn for the past few years have been chunky smartwatches and hybrid models. I had forgotten how slim and pretty women's watches could be until I swapped my semi-smart hybrid watch for the MVMT Hermosa watch.

It's so slim, light, and elegant that I almost forget I'm wearing it. The rose gold coloring goes with everything, and I love the mesh metal strap. The minimalist watch face design is appealing and easy to read, too.

The vast majority of the 227 reviews on MVMT's site are positive, and most are five stars. The only negative comments centered around the clasp, with some buyers saying it broke. In our experience, the clasp does take some getting used to, but it hasn't broke on us after nearly a year of wear.

Overall, the MVMT Hermosa watch is a great pick for people who like the all metal look and its fine mesh metal bracelet band. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Affordable, attractive, minimalist, stainless steel mesh band, comfortable to wear, slim

Cons: Not as cheap as some other options

The best flats for women

  • It's surprisingly hard to find comfortable flats that actually look good with most outfits, but the Everlane Day Glove flats are the answer.
  • They won't give you blisters or create an awkward leg line when you wear dresses — what more could you want?

One of the most cliché but true pieces of fashion advice that every woman comes across at one point or another is this: Buy at least one good pair of flats. Heels are great and all, but flats are the shoes that you can really live your life in. They don't hold you back — unless they give you massive blisters, of course.

To use another cliché, comfort is key here. Otherwise, what's the point? Just wear those heeled booties that everyone pretends are comfortable but actually make your back ache by midday. Your flats should be cozy enough to wear morning and night, cute enough to elevate a basic outfit, but simple enough to go with most of the items in your closet.

But for shoes that profess to be comfortable, flats have given me some of the worst foot pain of my life. Even the pointiest stilettos can't hurt me the way a stiff pair of leather ballet flats can. We've rounded up four pairs of flats with the best reviews to help you break the cycle of hope and bleeding ankles that so often comes with shopping for the perfect pair of everyday shoes.

Here are the best flats for women:

The best flats overall

The hardest part of shopping for flats is finding a pair that combines comfort, style, and versatility. Enter: The Day Glove flats by Everlane.

This is it — the wear-with-anything shoe you've been waiting for all your life. Everlane's leather Day Glove flat is an almost (but not quite) ballet slipper guaranteed to go with just about all your clothing, even workwear. It's like the perfect "nothing" shoe. It's cute enough not to ruin your outfit but plain enough not to make a huge statement.

Everlane's product description boasts "a snug, glove-like fit" that "will give with time and mold to the shape of your foot." Not only will the flats last, they'll get more comfortable over time! The shoes also feature pull tabs, ventilation holes, and comfy insoles to eliminate some of the most common comfort-related issues flats pose.

The Day Glove flats come in 14 colors, including classics like black and white as well as some fun shades like Rose and Pale Lemon, and they cost $115. While not inexpensive, this is a great deal for shoes that will last you more than one season. Since the Day Glove flat first launched in 2018, it has become the number one bestseller at Everlane. The Insider Picks team wrote up a full review after test-driving these flats, and they remain an all-time favorite from the brand

"Everlane's Day Glove flats are much more comfortable than any other flats I've tried," writes Insider Picks guides editor Malarie Gokey, "They actually fit my foot and move with me — not against me."

The shoes also garnered several rave reviews on The Cut, and Bustle editor Olivia Muenter reported that 100 Everlane customers who tried the shoes before the official launch had overwhelmingly positive feedback: "While the 100 reviewers all had slightly different takeaways from the shoes overall, there was one description that came up again and again: that they actually fit like gloves."

In addition to the original leather style, you might also consider the ReKnit version, which has a textured, breathable knit upper and is made from recycled materials. It's not available in as many colors, but it is more affordable at $98 and is just as comfortable as its predecessor— Erin Mayer

Pros: Molds to your foot shape over time cushioned insoles for support, ventilated, pull tab for easy slip-on

Cons: On the pricey side, reviewers noted that snug fit means you may want to size up, Everlane only has four retail locations so you'll likely need to order online.

The best travel-friendly flats

You don't have to resort to wearing sneakers when you travel thanks to the soft, pliable, and supportive Allbirds Tree Breezer.

Allbirds is probably better known for its Silicon Valley uniform-mandated sneakers like the Wool Runners and Tree Runners. But when you don't want to wear sneakers but still need the same comfort and support, you're better off with its flat silhouette, the Tree Breezer.

These are the flats you'll want to pack in your suitcase because a) they're very light and you can fold them up to maximize packing space, and b) you can walk around in them all day long.

Quell any fears you have of hobbling through a walking tour or calling it an early night because your feet have become one giant blister. The Breezers have bouncy outsoles made from sugarcane and soft, odor-minimizing merino wool-lined insoles. The knit collar wraps onto your foot securely, and the rest of the shoe's knit body is breathable and feels silky smooth against your skin.

Since the style is more sleek and formal than Allbirds' other shoes, they won't look out of place in a dressier environment. Instead of packing multiple pairs of shoes, you can just bring your all-in-one Tree Breezer flats. If you don't have a chance to try them first before you board your flight, don't worry — most of the Insider Picks team didn't need to break them in. — Connie Chen

Pros: First Allbirds style available in half sizes, lightweight, foldable, machine-washable

Cons: High popularity and limited stock mean many sizes or colors are often sold out

The best sustainable flats

On top of being versatile, lightweight, and machine-washable, the Rothy's Flat is sustainably made, and comes in a pointed-toe silhouette. It's the ideal shoe for the conscious consumer.

Shoe brand Rothy's was born out of the desire to repurpose wasteful, single-use plastics into something beautiful and practical. All of its knit shoes are made from 100% post-consumer plastic water bottles, which are hot washed, sterilized, then fused into a fiber that is knit into yarn.

The insoles contain recycled foam, while the rubber soles are carbon-free. The adhesives used are non-toxic and vegan. Even the packaging is made from post-consumer recycled materials and is biodegradable.

The lofty challenge of reducing your impact on the planet feels more manageable when you start with the things you use in your everyday life. Thanks to Rothy's, the endeavor won't compromise style or comfort.

Rothy's Flat is the choice for many modern working women because it boasts zero break-in time, a sleek look, and moisture-wicking breathability. You'll feel the difference immediately after slipping your feet in; the flats are very light and flexible, with a bit of give, and there aren't any uncomfortable seams or edges. They come in both round toe and pointed-toe silhouettes.

Keeping them in top shape is as easy as throwing them in the washing machine. You can also buy extra insoles to help prolong their life. After wearing them often (and you will because of their versatility), you might wonder if they'll actually hold up. But we've been wearing and washing our pairs for more than a year and they look and feel as good as they did on day one.

As a Vox article highlights, some women are such fans of the look and comfort that they wear the flats almost exclusively. It's also not unexpected to own multiple pairs since Rothy's offers many different colors and patterns. Most of them have limited runs, so don't wait too long on a style that catches your eye, and check back on the site often for new colors. —Connie Chen

Pros: Eco-friendly construction, machine-washable, don't stretch out over time, good variety of rotating colors and patterns

Cons: Fit might be narrow (particularly the pointed-toe style), so could need to size up

The best flats for wide feet

Margaux's Demi Flat comes in three different shoe widths, so you never have to miss out on a cute flat style because of your foot shape.

Ballet flats look deceptively simple. You know if you're reading this guide that it's hard to get the fit just right — some pairs gape, while others rely on uncomfortable heel elastics to stay on your foot.

You won't encounter this problem with Margaux. It makes flats in a large range of sizes (from 3 through 14), including half sizes. Instead of suggesting you size up or down for wide and narrow feet, the company ensures fit precision by offering each size in Narrow, Medium, and Wide widths. There's also a made-to-order option for a truly custom fit.

The Demi Flat from Margaux is a simple and elegant ballet flat that benefits from this sizing design. Editor Sally Kaplan, who has tried both Medium and Wide pairs of the flat, realized, "With all the walking I do, my feet end up swelling a bit, and the wide pair is more comfortable for long days out."

They feature plush foam padding to give your foot some support, as well as a small heel so you're not walking completely flat on the ground. The bow at the top of the shoe is adjustable in case you want to give your foot even more breathing room.

You can get the flats in two luxuriously soft and flexible materials, Italian suede or Italian napa leather, which each come in a small selection of colors that show off the materials beautifully.

Though they're more expensive than average at $155 a pair, one online reviewer sums up the appeal of Margaux's flats perfectly: "I'd rather own a single solid pair of ballet flats than a whole bunch of fun, but poorly made ones."— Connie Chen

Pros: Available in half sizes and three widths, elegant design, high-quality construction

Cons: Smaller color and pattern variety than other flat brands, can take some break-in time at the heel

The best luxury flats

The Stellato Sacchetto flats by M. Gemi have the look of a loafer and a pointy flat combined, and they're made of a buttery suede.

Cheap finds are amazing, but sometimes you want to shell out a little more cash for something that will really last. Flat shoes make a great style investment because they are more classic than they are trendy, and you can wear them with so many different pieces.

People online seem especially into The Stellato Sacchetto flats by the brand M. Gemi. Made in Toscana, Italy, these suede shoes feature an elegant pointed toe design. They come in eight different colors, from staples like black and cocoa brown to bolder shades like boysenberry and cerulean.

The Stellato Sacchetto shoes are made using the sacchetto technique, "meaning it's formed from one piece of suede, sans the stiff insole." Like the Everlane Day Glove, the brand claims these shoes will mold to fit the unique contours of your feet the more you wear them. Most things in life don't bend to your will the same way, so I think that's a major selling point.

Brit & Co. lists these shoes in its article "20 Pairs of Flats You'll Wear Every Day," and the flats have tons of glowing reviews on the M. Gemi website. "I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and craftsmanship of the shoe and adored the personalized packaging upon receiving it. Classy, elegant, comfortable and made in Italy at a reasonable price — need I say more?" says one customer.

"I love this shoe. I wear it almost everyday to work and will wear on the weekends when running errands cause it's more comfortable than a sneaker (and way cuter 😉)," writes another, who notes that she's had the same pair for three years running. — Erin Mayer

Note: Many colors are currently sold out. Add your name to the waitlist for an upcoming restock.

Pros: Sophisticated and elegant design, high-quality, comfortable, made to last

Cons: Not an all-weather shoe due to the suede material

The best ballet flats

The Sam Edelman 'Felicia' Flats are the perfect ballet flats because they're not too prim and proper, but not particularly edgy, either.

You're either a ballet flat person or you're so not a ballet flat person. While any rounded toe shoe could technically be included in this category, I only count the ones with ballet-esque detailing as true ballet flats. It's the former dancer in me — She's bored and has nothing better to do than critique Natalie Portman's technique in "Black Swan" and judge your footwear.

Sam Edelman 'Felicia' Flat really does look like a ballet slipper I used to buy at my local dance supply store, with its softly rounded upper and elastic bows on the toes. It comes in a ton of different materials and colors, from your classic black leather to mulberry suede. There are even a few patterned options if that's more your speed.

These shoes have a 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Nordstrom's website, based on 1,600 reviews. Additionally, Best Products included the 'Felicia' flat in its list of best ballet flats for women.

"[T]hese flats felt like slippers from the moment I took them out of the box," writes one buyer. "I'm so happy with them I am donating all my other ballerina flats that hurt but are cute. These were definitely worth every penny."

Several reviewers said they loved these flats so much they bought them in multiple colors. The main con people mentioned had to do with sizing. The shoes run a little small, so consider sizing up. — Erin Mayer

Pros: Tons of color and fabric options, reasonably priced, comfortable

Cons: May not run true to size

The best men's bathrobes

$

  • Bathrobes are welcome all year round thanks to the casual comfort they afford, but they're indispensable during the cold winter months.
  • If stepping out of the hot shower into the chilly bathroom is your nightmare, then a soft, warm robe is a dream come true.
  • The TowelSelections Men's Plush Kimono Robe is our top choice because it's well-priced (under $40), well-made, and luxuriously soft.

I went to college just before social media flourished and only a year or two before smartphones with cameras became ubiquitous. I'm grateful for the timing in regards to the technology for two reasons: First, there was no quick and ready way to solve debates over this or that random fact (e.g. "No, Braveheart won Best Picture that year, not The English Patient!" or "Dude, the capital of Colombia is Bogotá, not Caracas! I think..."), so the conversations often spiraled off into the blissfully ridiculous; second, there are relatively few candid pictures of me and my friends dressed like idiots and/or doing decidedly idiotic things.

For indeed I must admit that, for a semester or two, I was often to be seen wandering around the halls of the dorm and even at times plying the streets of Boston wearing a bathrobe. By my junior year of college, I had decidedly shifted away from wearing loungewear in public, and today, I'll scarcely be caught bringing trash to the curb without first having donned proper attire.

In the home, however — and especially when the late autumn chill sets in — I'm still a great aficionado of the bathrobe. I have a cotton robe I often don immediately after bathing and a fleece robe I'll wear about in the morning until it's time to dress in actual clothes. My son has a fleece robe that may or may not match its navy blue color. And my wife has a cashmere robe of which I may or may not harbor secret envy.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to get a good bathrobe, but on the other hand, if you're willing to shell out some cash, you can get a robe that will last you for many years. The funny thing about bathrobes is that for some men, their best choice is often a low-cost option. For example, I don't care for the feel of silk. I would never buy a silk robe, thus incidentally shielding me from the elevated cost. A man who lives in a warm climate might want a thin, lightweight robe, thus de facto ensuring he will end up with a lower cost garment. And polyester fleece, one of the softest and coziest materials, is also one of the cheapest.

Choosing the right robe isn't rocket science, but as you might wear the thing every single day for the next ten years, go ahead and choose with care. Consider materials, the weight and warmth a robe, the length and fit, and of course the price. And if you think you might wear your bathrobe while walking down Bolyston Street on a Thursday afternoon, then, by all means, consider style, too.

Here are the best men's bathrobes you can buy:

Updated on 10/21/2019 by Amir Ismael: Updated links.

The best men's bathrobe overall

The warm, well-made TowelSelections Men's Plush Kimono Robe will be as comfortable after 100 wash cycles as it was the first time you slipped it on.

If you close your eyes and picture a bathrobe, it probably looks a lot like the TowelSelections Men's Plush Kimono Robe. This is a warm, plush robe with a thick collar, a broad belt, and a pair of large pockets. The collar helps to keep you warm, the wide belt prevents uncomfortable pressure, and the pockets are perfect for cold hands or to hold a bottle of shampoo and your comb as you head toward the bathroom.

The robe is machine washable and can be tumbled dry at lower heat settings, and it will last for years and years of daily use provided you launder it with care. That quality is largely due to the centuries-old tradition of garment production in Turkey, the country from which the TowelSelections Men's Plush Kimono Robe is imported. While it's not made from traditional cotton, the skill with which the company manipulates modern polyester fleece will be immediately evident.

All things considered, this well-priced robe is a fine choice to wear during your evening hygiene regimen, but an even better choice to wear all day long on those lazy Sundays.

The TowelSelection's Kimono Robe has an excellent 4.7-star average rating on Amazon, with one owner calling it "the best robe I have owned," while another satisfied customer says it's "light in weight but very warm" and adding that he would "definitely recommend it to anyone."

A writer with Bathrobes Design notes this robe's "excellent smoothness and absorbency," while a product reviewer from Bathrobes appreciates its "lightweight design" and ease of machine washing and drying.

Pros: Retains softness for years, available in several colors, good price for good quality

Cons: Sizes run large

The best warm bathrobe

There's no reason to fear those cold winter mornings when you can wrap yourself in the extra-warm, extra-long Alexander Del Rossa Fleece Hooded Bathrobe.

There's little better than settling down into the deep bubbling waters of an outdoor hot tub on a chilly winter evening. But there's basically nothing worse than getting out of that warm, welcome water and scrambling through the frosty air as you head inside. When the bathroom floor tiles are cold underfoot and the cool bedroom air is wafting through the door after your hot shower, just getting cleaned up can bring its share of shocking cold. That is, unless you have the Alexander Del Rossa Fleece Hooded Bathrobe.

This ankle length bathrobe is made using twin layers of polar fleece. It has a large hood that wraps over your head, keeping your crown, ears, and neck warm, and its generous fit wraps around your body with plenty of overlap. Basically, this bathrobe will keep you warm from the top of your head right down to your ankles, and that includes your hands, thanks to a pair of oversized pockets.

This is a big, soft, warm robe. It might even be too bulky or too warm for many men, but for those who hate being cold after bathing, after a swim or a soak, or merely while lounging about the house, it's a surefire winner.

With more than one thousand reviews logged online, this robe has an admirable 4.6-star rating. One gentleman who loves his Alexander Del Rossa Fleece Hooded Bathrobe appreciates the "soft thick fabric, with enough fabric to wrap over itself in the front and keep those drafts out," with another customer adding that the robe is "very long, VERY soft and comfy." He adds that he would "rather be in this than any other clothes."

A product review with DigPerformance called this bathrobe "high quality" and pointed out the fact that it was "colored with inactive dyes which are chemical free." That helps the robe maintain its color and means reduced exposure to potentially hazardous compounds.

Pros: Dual-layered insulation, hood for added warmth and comfort, stays tied reliably

Cons: Fabric pills with repeated washings

The best affordable men's bathrobe

The Latuza Cotton Flannel Robe is an absolute classic right down to its materials and print design. Plus, it's affordable.

The Latuza Men's Cotton Flannel Robe would not have looked out of place hanging on the bathroom door at your grandfather's house, and chances are good that this robe will still look right at home in your grandchildren's closet, too. This is an elegantly simple garment that's lightweight enough for year-round use but warm enough to take the sting out of a frosty morning newspaper recovery when draped over your pajamas.

The Latuza robe is 100% cotton flannel and comes in several different plaid patterns, including a timeless red and blue blend and a few different light and dark checkered styles. Comfort and classic styling aside, this bathrobe is perhaps most attractive thanks to its low price tag. The robe costs less than $30, yet it will last for years and years whether worn for a few minutes after the shower or whether serving as your outer layer of loungewear for hours on end.

With an average 4.6 out of five-star rating, this robe is almost universally well-liked by its owners. One gentleman calls it "well made and nice looking," while another says "it's nice and warm."

Just bear in mind that, as many reviews warn, this robe will shrink "after a couple of trips through the hot dryer." Being as it's made from cotton, you should expect that, though.

Pros: Great low price tag, classic styling, lightweight but comfortable

Cons: Shrinks with washing, belt too thin

The best silk bathrobe

If you take your leisure time as seriously as you take your work, then treat yourself to the LilySilk Long Pure Silk Robe and lounge about the house in high-class style.

A silk bathrobe is almost a meme for an over-the-top dedication to relaxation. But many men who slip on a silk robe quickly stop laughing and start sighing with contentment. Silk is soft, smooth, and lightweight, and garments made of silk are considered by many to be the height of style. You will certainly look the part of the poised playboy in the LilySilk Long Pure Silk Robe, and you'll feel the part, too.

Ah, but there are a few good reasons to own a silk robe beyond the whole lounging lothario business. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and it's amazingly gentle on the skin. So if you suffer from allergies — both those related to a given fabric or those exacerbated by the bacteria, mold, or dander that might build up in some fabrics — or if you have sensitive skin, silk is a great choice.

This robe is made from 100% natural mulberry silk and is available in several rich colors. Just make sure you're nice and dry before slipping it on, or the fabric will cling to you like glue.

The men who own this bathrobe simply love it. One calls it an "extremely high-quality product" made from "great materials." Another owner remarks on the robe's "beautiful styling" and its excellent fit.

In a video review, a product tester notes the "high-quality fabric" used by LilySilk and says that they are a great choice for allergy sufferers.

Pros: Smooth and luxurious feel, unique styling, lasts for years with proper care

Cons: Rather expensive, clings to wet skin

The best cashmere bathrobe

The Cashmere Boutique Full-Length Robe may be pricey, but it's also likely a lifetime purchase that's super soft and comfy.

Yes, this bathrobe costs nearly $330, and for that same price, you could buy several complete head-to-toe outfits of clothing. But once you slip on a genuine cashmere robe for the first time, you'll likely never go back to another material. And don't worry, buying the Cashmere Boutique Full-Length Robe isn't spoiling yourself, exactly. If handled and laundered with proper care, this bathrobe should last for years if not for decades.

The robe is made from three-ply cashmere sourced and woven in Nepal, the native home of the eponymous world-renowned cashmere goats. As these goats live where altitude, wind chill, and snow conspire to create extremely harsh climates, their wool is remarkably warm and dense, which allows it to be used in making remarkably warm and soft garments. This bathrobe will almost assuredly become the most comfortable piece of clothing you own.

A customer named Steve calls the robe "perfect," saying it's "soft, light, and warm." An owner named James calls it "soft and comfortable" and praises the robe's excellent fit.

An article published by Cliché Magazine pointed out the many "vibrant colors" in which the robe is available and noted that its "three-ply cashmere" ensured "the utmost quality."

Pros: Amazing softness, lasts for years, warm and comfortable

Cons: Very expensive, requires careful laundering

The best post-shower bathrobe

Parachute's Classic Bathrobe is an excellent buy at $99 with its plush texture and 100% long-staple Turkish cotton fabric.

When you picture a hotel bathrobe, it probably looks quite a bit like Parachute's Classic bathrobe. This is a high-end, well-made robe in a classic style.

It has two slouchy front pockets, a waist tie, and shawl collar, so you can feel comfortable hanging out in the robe after a shower. The robe is made from 100% long-staple Turkish cotton fabric that is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, so you won't find any harmful chemicals or synthetics.

The cotton is rated at 450 grams per square meter, which means the robe has a good weight to it, and the texture is soft and plush. Some people dislike weighty robes, so if that's you, you'll want to pass onto a lighter option.

When it first came out, this robe was in such high demand that it frequently sold out and people were on waiting lists to buy it. Now, you can get Parachute's Classic Robe fairly easily, but the quality that made it a must-have is still clearly felt by all who buy it.

Pros: 100% cotton, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, plush feel, weighty robe, classic style

Cons: Not as cheap as some, heavy feel isn't for everyone

The best white dress shirts for men

  • Every man needs at least one good white dress shirt.
  • Fine Italian-woven cotton, old-school American craftsmanship, and a great trim fit make the Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece shirt a must-have for the modern gentleman. Its versatile spread collar looks great with or without a tie, so you can pair this timeless staple with almost any outfit.

There are few menswear staples that are as timeless and essential as a crisp white dress shirt. Men have been reaching for white dress shirts for as long as they've been wearing suits, although the clean, classic look of this garment works with just about any outfit, making it one of the best and most versatile pieces of clothing a guy can have in his wardrobe.

There's a good chance you're already fairly familiar with dress shirts, and you probably already have a few. There's also a good chance, however, that there's a lot more to a quality dress shirt than you're aware of. Here's a quick run-down of things to look for in your next dress shirt:

Choosing the right fabric is key

Cotton is the standard material used for dress shirting, but it's not all made the same way. Natural shirt fabrics are generally classified according to the weave:

  • Poplin (or broadcloth) is a soft weave that is light, breathable, and wrinkle-resistant.
  • Oxford is a medium-bodied basket-woven cotton with a slightly rough texture.
  • Twill has a tight diagonal weave that results in a thick, substantial cloth.
  • Pinpoint is similar to Oxford but woven with thinner threads for a smoother hand.
  • End-on-end features contrasting warp and weft threads that create a heathered look.

Synthetic materials like polyester permeate the field of men's dress shirts today owing to their low cost, but these fabrics simply do not look, feel, or breathe as well as quality cotton, so keep it natural. You might see some shirtmakers use terms like "yarn number" (referring to the thickness of the yarn) or "ply" (meaning the number of threads comprising the yarn, e.g. "two-ply"). These aren't necessarily indicators of quality so don't sweat about them too much.

The fit should be trim and tailored

Dress shirts should be fairly trim. The important thing here is to avoid the big, baggy, blousy over-sized shirts many men are wearing. Also important is collar fit. There should be no visible gap between the collar and your neck, but you want to be able to comfortably insert two fingers inside the collar. If you can't, it's too tight.

A proper dress shirt's size will be labeled by two numbers which indicate collar size and sleeve length – dress shirts shouldn't be labeled with generic garment sizes like "medium." A 15/34 shirt, for example, has a 15-inch collar circumference and a 34-inch sleeve length measured from the back of the neck down to the cuff. To suss out your ideal size, use a flexible tape measure to measure your body or find a shirt you already have that fits perfectly and measure that. And find a good tailor.

Cuff and collar construction matter

Dress shirt styles mostly boil down to the collar and cuffs. Cuffs typically come in two flavors: Barrel cuffs, which feature a button closure, and French cuffs, which are folded back on themselves and held closed with cufflinks. Collars are a bit more varied and are classified by the cut with spread, cutaway, point, tab, club, and button-down being the most common. Your collar choice depends on the ties you want to wear with your shirt and whether or not you plan to wear the dress shirt without a necktie.

The best white dress shirt overall

If you're only going to get one white dress shirt, then this luxurious, stylish, and versatile Brooks Brothers' Golden Fleece Shirt is the one you want.

It doesn't get much more versatile than the classic spread collar for your go-to dress shirt. This style works with most neckties and knots, although a spread collar is especially well-suited for the wider Windsor and mid-sized half-Winsdor. If you only plan to have one white dress shirt in your rotation, then the versatility of the spread collar makes it a tough act to beat.

However, a spread collar is also a fine choice for going tieless, whether you're pairing your white dress shirt with a light-colored summer suit – a perfect excuse to ditch the neckwear altogether – or wearing it with a crisp pair of chinos or jeans for a casual evening out. As one of the oldest and most respected menswear brands in the world, it's only fitting that our top pick for a white dress shirt comes from Brooks Brothers.

This dress shirt is part of the Golden Fleece Collection, one of Brooks Brothers' high-end lines. The cotton is woven in Italy in a durable twill that gives the shirt a thick body and a nice smooth hand.

The spread collar lends the shirt a classic English-style flair and works with just about any tie, while the double-button barrel cuffs with rounded edges offer a classic American look. The "Regent" fit is suitably slim and modern without being too fashion-forward or constricting.

Sadly, many of the garment factories in the United States and Europe have shut down, and most shirtmakers – Brooks Brothers included – now manufacture most of their stuff overseas. Golden Fleece shirts, however, are cut and stitched right in Brooks Brothers' shirtmaking facility in Garland, North Carolina, so you're getting old-school American craftsmanship from the old-school American menswear label.

That, in my opinion, puts this shirt above the rest and makes it more than worth the money considering it'll be your go-to white dress shirt for decades with proper care. If you're a "buy once, cry once" kinda guy, and you only need one solid white dress shirt in your rotation, then the Brooks Brothers Golden Fleece spread-collar is the one for you.

Pros: Fine American craftsmanship, a slim but not constricting fit, sturdy Italian-woven twill, and a classic spread collar that works with most ties and outfits

Cons: It's fairly expensive

The best lightweight summer shirt

This crisp white dress shirt from T. M. Lewin uses a cotton and linen blend that's just what the tailor ordered when you want to look sharp and beat the heat.

Almost all quality dress shirts are made from 100% cotton, but as men are wearing suits more, cotton/linen blends have become a popular choice of shirting material for those hot summer months. Cotton by itself is not the most breathable cloth, and while linen is very light and airy, it wrinkles about as easily as wrapping paper. A nice blended fabric, on the other hand, combines the body of cotton with the coolness of linen, presenting a near-perfect hot-weather alternative to all-cotton garments.

Founded in 1898, T. M. Lewin is a famous English shirtmaker hailing from Jermyn Street in London, the capital of traditional menswear (sorry, Italy). With more than a century of experience, you can expect that T. M. Lewin knows a thing or two about shirting, and this crisp white cotton and linen number is the one you want to reach for when the sun comes out and it's time to retire the twill.

T.M. Lewin delivers, in our opinion, a lot of value when it comes to traditional shirtmaking. And while this Jermyn Street brand may be old-school, it's kept up with the times, offering clean-looking slim cuts that outclass the blousy, billowy shirts of past decades. The 71% cotton/29% linen fabric breathes and moves nicely. It will get more wrinkly than plain cotton, but as a well-dressed man, you surely already know your way around an iron.

The classic point collar hits the sweet spot between size and spread, allowing it to work well with most ties and tie knots. I recommend sticking with a four-in-hand or half-Windsor for this one, especially considering you're probably not going to be wearing thick, chunky neckties in the summer heat. However, point collars like this are also great for going tie-less, and the subtle light blue styling on the inside of the collar and placket looks great with a button or two undone.

This light blue accent is also present on the button threads, while the second forearm button lets you roll up those sleeves if you want to go for a super-casual look. Go ahead and roll 'em. In hot weather, you want to look as good as you feel, and the T. M. Lewin cotton/linen dress shirt is just the ticket. The cut corners on the shirt's mitered cuff do lend the shirt a bit of extra formality, however, so it pairs just as beautifully with any light-colored spring or summer suit.

Pros: Cool yet crisp cotton/linen blend fabric, a flattering slim fit, and a classic point collar that works with or without a tie

Cons: The cotton/linen fabric is more prone to wrinkling than 100 percent cotton

The best French-cuff dress shirt

Every man should have at least one French cuff dress shirt in his closet, and this slim-fit twill spread-collar from Charles Tyrwhitt is an excellent choice.

For your first white dress shirt, it's probably best to stick with more versatile button cuffs. Nonetheless, it behooves the well-dressed man to have at least one or two French cuff shirts in his rotation, and since you're likely to have a few white dress shirts, a high-quality double-cuffed example should be among them.

The French cuff, also called the double cuff, is cut longer than a standard barrel cuff so that it may fold back over itself. In lieu of buttons, the cuff is held together at the wrist via cufflinks. This results in a larger, more substantial cuff and a very sharp and old-school look.

Charles Tyrwhitt, like T. M. Lewin, is another famous Jermyn Street brand and one of our favorite shirtmakers. It's not as old as some other English menswear labels but has nonetheless built a strong name for itself with its excellent (not to mention high-value) shirting options. This spread collar twill dress shirt is our pick for your first pair of French cuffs given its excellent price-to-quality ratio, especially if you're not yet sure this style is for you and aren't ready to drop a Benjamin or two.

French cuff shirts are generally more formal than barrel cuffs and you're not likely to be wearing one without a jacket or suit and a tie. Studier, thicker fabrics work best for double cuffs, which explains our choice of Charles Tyrwhitt's substantial-yet-soft twill weave for this one. A traditional shirt like this calls for a spread collar, too, as the conservative cuff style pairs best with a medium-to-wide necktie and a half-Windsor or Windsor knot.

Keep your outfit conservative with this shirt – overly colorful socks, ties, or pocket squares, as well as too many other accessories like jewelry or large watches, will leave your ensemble looking costumey and garish with French cuffs and cufflinks. "Simple and sophisticated" is the rule here: Rock the Charles Tyrwhitt double cuff shirt with a dark suit, a striped repp or solid-colored tie, and a nice pair of sleek cufflinks for a stylish yet no-nonsense business ensemble.

Pros: A substantial yet soft cotton twill, a classic and versatile spread collar, it comes with a pair of brass collar stays, and it's an excellent value

Cons: The corporate look of French cuffs limits the possibilities of wearing this shirt without a suit or jacket

The best Oxford cloth button-down

Made in the United States of fine Supima cotton with quality touches you won't find on many other shirts, the Brooks Brothers Oxford cloth button-down deserves a place in your wardrobe.

In the world of shirts, the Oxford cloth button-down (or OCBD) is the workhorse – at least that's the case in America, where this style was first popularized around the turn of the 20th century. "Button-down" here refers not to the buttons on front of the shirt, but rather those on the collar, which is typically softer and less structured than collars found on more formal dress shirts and thus has buttons at the corners to keep it in place.

As America's oldest menswear company, it should come as no huge shock that Brooks Brothers invented and popularized the Oxford cloth button-down shirt. Nor should it come as a surprise that our pick for an OCBD hails from this label. Most dress shirt collars feature a stiff interlining that keeps the collar rigid, but button-down collars generally lack this, instead featuring a collar that feels more like the natural fabric of the shirt and is thus softer and arguably more comfortable to wear all day long.

Pretty much all men's clothing brands offer some variety of OCBD, but it only seems proper that we give the nod to Brooks Brothers, the pioneer of this style, for this one. A number of quality factors put this example well ahead of the competition, too. It's made right here in the United States of American-grown Supima cotton, it boasts genuine mother of pearl buttons, and the styling is spot on with its slimmer Regent fit and subtle rolled (not folded) collar.

The Oxford cloth button-down is a fairly casual style, and some menswear experts assert that it's not even a true "dress shirt." That may be true, honestly, but unless you're working on Wall Street or in the London banking district, you're probably okay to wear your OCBD to work. The flip side of that coin is that this shirt looks great with just about any casual outfit. Feel free to wear it with any sharp pair of chinos or indigo jeans – tucked in, of course, with a nice leather belt– and roll the sleeves if you want.

For business wear, the Oxford cloth button-down will work well with most suits, but avoid jackets with wide lapels (which should not be an issue as most suitmakers today have ditched this dated style). I also recommend sticking with a slim-to-medium tie, perhaps a nice silk or cotton knit to complement the OCBD's more casual look, with a classic four-in-hand knot instead of a bulkier Windsor or half-Windsor that may clash with the softer button-down collar.

Pros: Made in America of U.S.-grown cotton, excellent attention to detail, a slim fit with a nicely rolled button-down collar, and a great casual style that suits almost any outfit

Cons: The style is distinctly casual and isn't appropriate for formal occasions

The best budget white dress shirt

With its pinpoint cotton weave and classic no-frills style, this crisp white shirt from The Tie Bar proves that you don't have to settle for polyester if you want a dress shirt that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

You've probably noticed by now that, unlike those polyester department store monstrosities, good traditionally-made dress shirts can get expensive. Price is an easier pill to swallow when you understand that a quality garment can remain in your wardrobe for decades, but if you're on a budget, or if you just want a less expensive "backup shirt" in your corner, then there are some more affordable options out there.

Thankfully, men aren't restricted to department stores anymore. The internet has seen the rise of a ton of great menswear brands that make it much easier to avoid the baggy polyester pitfalls of yesteryear. Since its founding in 2004, The Tie Bar has become one of our favorite brands for well-made, low-cost neckties, but this relatively young startup now offers a myriad of other menswear staples as well. Not the least of these is its wide lineup of dress shirts.

Our pick for a good budget-friendly white dress shirt is The Tie Bar's pinpoint offering. Pinpoint is a smooth, relatively lightweight Oxford-like weave with a pleasant hand, making this shirt a highly versatile choice for year-round wear. The style is as classic as it gets, too, with a standard point collar that works with just about any tie and one that can easily be worn tie-less in more casual settings.

At $55, it's is an excellent value for an all-cotton dress shirt and even features a couple of nice little touches for the price, such as plastic collar stays and mitered cuffs (which are clipped at the corners) for a smart look. The Tie Bar website also suggests accessories to match with your shirt, and at these prices, you might as well grab a couple of ties and pocket squares while you're at it.

Pros: The all-cotton pinpoint is comfortable and wearable year-round, it's an excellent value for a traditionally-made dress shirt, includes plastic collar stays, and the point collar is the most versatile style you can get

Cons: The longer length requires the shirt to be tucked at all times

How to take care of your new white dress shirts

Dress shirts require proper care like all quality garments. Launder dress shirts in cold water and then tumble dry, hanging them up to air dry if they're a bit damp. Heat causes cotton to shrink which is a particular problem with dress shirts due to their specific sizing.

Shrinkage does weird things to collars, too, due to the interlined construction. There's no shortage of online reviews where guys washed their dress shirts like T-shirts and caused them to shrink and warp, erroneously blaming the garment for their mistake.

Invest in decent hangers if you store shirts in your closet. Plastic hangers are okay, but avoid wire hangers altogether. Even better is aromatic cedar wood, which absorbs ambient moisture and keeps things fresh. Folding your shirts and placing them in a drawer is fine, too, and putting some cedar blocks in there will have the same effect. Finally, learn how to properly iron your dress shirts so they'll always look and feel as crisp as they did when they were new.

  • In the past hundred years, the T-shirt has evolved from an unseen undergarment into one of the most popular and prominent articles of clothing a man wears.
  • The Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee is our top pick because the shirt is comfortable, flattering, and made to last.

In the course of any given day, I go through an average of three T-shirts. Which might seem (and might be) excessive, but it will make sense if I lay things out for you. In the morning, after my son wakes me up with loving taps on my forehead sometime in the six o'clock hour, I slip on the T-shirt I was wearing right before bed the night prior and head downstairs for coffee and playtime and such. I'll sometimes change into a different T-shirt when I get dressed for work, but as I work from home, usually I just put on real pants and step into my office.

Midday, I go for a run, during which I wear a shirt specifically designed for athletics and which we're not featuring here. Most of my running shirts are great performance-wise but are about as stylish as neon Crocs. After exercising and showering, I put on another T-shirt which, depending on the shape of the rest of the day, may serve through to the next morning, or which may be replaced yet again.

So I own and wear a lot of T-shirts. If you're looking to add a few fine T-shirts to your wardrobe, you've come to the right guy. Today, I've selected six of the best men's T-shirts that are perfect for guys who treat this noble garment not as a layer, but as the grace note to the ensemble. Oh, and I also threw in one that is ideal for layering. And one that's best suited to lazy days spent at home. And one that looks good enough to wear out to a coffee shop or bar but that's also ready for an impromptu hike or pickup ball game.

One note before we start our odyssey: Except where a brand's product name is specified otherwise, I'll be using the term "T-shirt." Not tee, not t shirt, but just T-shirt. After all, these garments are named for their T-shape, and they are shirts.

Here are the best T-shirts you can buy:

Updated on 10/21/2019 by Amir Ismael: Added one new pick and updated formatting and prices.

The best men's T-shirt overall

You can feel the quality of the Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee the first time you wear it, and you'll enjoy the shirt for years to come.

As the name suggests, the Buck Mason Pima Curved Hem Tee is made from 100% pima cotton. Pima is American cotton prized for its long fibers that allow for a tight, durable weave and that yield an amazing softness despite that durability.

Also as the name suggests, the hem of this shirt has a curved arc along the front and back that adds a bit of stylish accent, hides your stomach when you lift your hands, and helps keep the T-shirt in place should you ever tuck it in.

The Pima Curved Hem Tee comes in a dozen different colors, all of which are muted yet masculine. And it arrives pre-shrunk, so you should choose a size that will fit you well right out of the box. Oh and one more note: Not only is this Buck Mason shirt made with American cotton, but it's made in America, too.

A writer with Time Magazine was effusive in his praise for Buck Mason T-shirts, saying they have a "perfect fit" and held up well even after repeated washings.

Pros: Comfortable from day one, well-made and durable, available in many colors

Cons: I haven't found one yet, folks...

The best men's T-shirt for casual comfort

The Everlane Cotton Crew is comfortable the first time you put it on, but even softer and comfier the hundredth time.

To be honest, there's nothing all that interesting about the appearance of the Everlane Cotton Crew T-shirt. Sure, it comes in 14 different solid colors and in a few two-color striped patterns as well, but the shirt's cut, length, collar, and really all of its design elements are rather basic and certainly just what you'd expect from any good slim-fit T-shirt.

It's how the Everlane Cotton Crew feels that sets this shirt apart. Made from a durable mid-weight cotton that softens over time, the more you wear and wash an Everlane T-shirt, the more comfortable it will get. As a go-to hang around the house or walk the dog shirt, there are few better options out there. And given how well these T-shirts hold up over time, the $20 price tag is more than fair.

One Everlane customer called his Cotton Crew a "great everyday shirt" that was comfortable and clearly of "great quality." Another said he "loved the fit... and the feel" of the T-shirt, a garment he had grown to "treasure."

A quick note to keep in mind for sizing: Some customers felt the shirt ran a bit too long.

Pros: Fabric softens over time, available in solid and stripes, good price point

Cons: Shirts run a bit long

The best men's V-neck T-shirt

The Mott & Bow V-Neck Driggs will fit most men to a T, if you'll pardon the pun, thanks to the "not too slim, nor too loose" cut.

Finding a T-shirt that fits your body well, that both looks good and feels comfortable, can be a harrowing journey. Many T-shirts are too tight for one body type; some are too baggy for others. Few manage to suit myriad men's torsos with a fit that's flattering and comfortable, but into that narrow space marches the (still relatively) new line of T-shirts from Mott & Bow.

The V-Neck Driggs T-shirt has a cut the company describes as "not too slim, nor too loose," and while I take issue with the company's grammar ("neither too slim, nor too loose" or "not too slim, or too loose" for the record. Also, that comma is superfluous), I'm a fan of its wares.

The Mott & Bow V-Neck Driggs shirt is woven in Peru using cotton jersey fibers that give the garment a soft, flexible feel. It's a great shirt to wear on days when you want to stay comfortable while active, such as when you're traveling, touring a city, or spending a long evening with friends. And while $32 per shirt starts to edge out of my usual comfort zone for spending money on a T-shirt, these are worth it. They weather well.

Several writers and editors from Business Insider also tested out Mott & Bow T-shirts and found them "comfortable with a cool and lightweight feel" and durable in construction.

Pros: Cut fits many body types, preshrunk, soft and flexible feel

Cons: Slightly overpriced

The best men's T-shirt to wear as an undershirt

The Mack Weldon 18-Hour Jersey Crew Neck Undershirt is so comfortable you'll look for excuses to dress up just so you can layer it under your button-down.

I wear several articles of Mack Weldon clothing with regularity, and I've sung the praises of the brand before, but for far too long I overlooked the brand's most humble of apparel, the undershirt.

First, some clarity: The name 18-Hour Jersey Crew Neck Undershirt doesn't refer to the fact that the shirt remains comfortable even after 18 hours of wear or anything like that, even though it does. Instead, it refers to the fact that these shirts are constructed from fabric that is allowed to rest for at least 18 hours after it is woven to allow it to settle and contract fully, thus creating a garment with a consistent, comfortable fit.

Said fabric is a blend of cotton, modal (spun cellulose; think Rayon), and spandex that creates a shirt with enough stretch to say in place on your torso and arms but with enough softness not to feel clingy or unpleasant. The shirt's long cut makes it perfect for tucking in under clothes, while the shoulder seams are rotated forward of the actual shoulder line, thus reducing the ride up of the sleeves.

A writer from Menswear Review said of the Mack Weldon 18-Hour Jersey undershirt that the "overall fit is amazing" and that the fabric blend has "great shape retention [and] doesn't stretch out during the day."

Pros: Consistent fit, long cut for tucking in, soft and flexible fabric blend

Cons: Shoulder seams visible through some outerwear, pricey

The best men's T-shirt for casual wear and sports

At a glance, the Columbia Thistletown Park Crew is just any casual T-shirt, but after an hour of activity, you'll appreciate that it's actually built for performance.

As I said above, I have a number of great athletic T-shirts that aren't so great when it comes to fashion. And a few of those shirts are indeed from Columbia Sportswear. But I also own a number of Columbia garments that I'm more than happy to wear while running errands, grabbing a beer with a buddy, or just hanging out somewhere with the family. But while I appreciate the fact that the Columbia Thistletown Park Crew looks like any casual T-shirt out there, the reason I love this shirt is that it's secretly ready for action.

Made from a blend of 67% polyester and 33% cotton heather jersey, the shirt is comfortable and highly breathable. Its weave features Columbia's proprietary Omni-Wick design that helps pull sweat off your body (to wick it, e.g.) and move the moisture away from you for ideal evaporative cooling. And as a guy who runs hot temperature-wise and sweats rather easily, that's a serious plus. The shirt also has a built-in UPF 15 sun protection.

One Columbia customer hits two major selling points on the head when he calls it "very comfortable and well crafted," while another attests that the Thistletown Park Crew dries quickly and is easy to maintain.

Note that some gents report the shirt running small, so if you're on the cusp of a size, consider ordering the next larger one than you would with other garments.

Pros: Casual styling, sweat-wicking material, rapid drying

Cons: Sizes run a bit small

Though just as there's variety in the available options, there's also variety in a wearer's desired application or workout style. Perhaps a runner wants a more lightweight option or a fitness fanatic desires something that looks good every day, no matter the activity. Regardless of intent, there's a suitable workout shirt designed specifically for everyone. A great workout shirt doesn't just get the job done, but it does so without sacrificing performance, comfort, or style.

Here are the best men's workout shirts you can buy:

Forever 21 is selling a shirt printed with the name of an Ariana Grande song 2 months after she filed a lawsuit against the brand

forever 21 ariana grande sweatshirt

Forever 21 is selling a sweatshirt that could have been inspired by Ariana Grande just days after a lawsuit between the company and singer was paused.

The black sweatshirt retails for $22.99, and has the phrase "Don't call me angel" written above an image of a cherub. The phrase is reminiscent of Grande's hit song, "Don't Call Me Angel," which was released in September in support of the upcoming "Charlie's Angels" film. Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey are also featured on the song.

don't call me angel shirt

The Pop Hub, a pop-culture site, shared a screenshot of the sweatshirt on Monday and compared it to Grande's song.

Grande fans on Twitter replied to the tweet and agreed that the shirt seemed to be inspired by the song.

It's currently unclear if Grande or her team have trademarked the "Don't call me angel" phrase. It's also unclear if Forever 21 was directly inspired by her music when creating the sweatshirt. Insider has reached out to representatives for Grande and Forever 21 for clarification but did not immediately hear back.

The musician is credited as a writer on the song, alongside Cyrus, Del Rey, Savan Kotecha, Max Martin, ILYA, and ALMA.

This isn't the first time Forever 21 has seemingly been inspired by Grande or her music

In September, the musician filed a $10 million lawsuit against the company over its advertisements, which her lawyers argued clearly reference the star.

Grande's lawyers accused the clothing retailer of hiring "a look-alike model" and using audio and lyrics from her song "7 Rings" on social media. According to her lawyers, the advertisements suggested "to the viewing public that Ms. Grande endorsed Forever 21, its products, and was affiliated with Forever 21."

The complaint included screenshots of Forever 21 social-media posts that it said used Grande's music and likeness earlier this year after the star walked away from a merchandise deal with the retailer. The ads no longer appear on the brand's social-media pages.

But on Friday, days before the sweatshirt appeared online, The Blast reported that Forever 21 paused the lawsuit previously filed by Grande.

The outlet reports that Forever 21 notified Grande that the lawsuit would be coming to a halt as a result of the company's recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Forever 21 and Grande will have to wait to pick up the lawsuit until the company's bankruptcy filing is resolved, according to The Blast.

The best women's T-shirt brands

You're a creature of many dimensions. Sure, it can take you two hours to get dressed, and sure, you can sometimes look at your closet full of clothes and assure yourself that none of it will work for your very normal day at work. But that's not always you. Really, more often than not, what you're really looking for in place of those two hours and your whole closet-full of clothes is a simple T-shirt. One that is as dependable as it is comfortable and stylish. Luckily, that T-shirt is not a white whale. It's very much available to buy.

When it comes to picking your favorite tee, there are a few factors to consider. First off, how do you want the shirt to fit? If you're hoping for something slim cut to accentuate your figure, you'll probably want to stay away from the boxy designs. On the other hand, if you're just looking to lounge, then you may want something looser.

Do you want your shirt to be more on the sheer side, or are you looking for a bit more coverage? Some of the most comfortable T-shirts out there are barely there — literally. If you're not about that life, be sure you're looking at a shirt that is solid all the way through.

Then, of course, you'll want to keep price points in mind. On the one hand, a great staple T-shirt is practically invaluable. But on the other hand, how much are you really willing to pay for a plain top that's meant to be one of the most casual pieces in your wardrobe?

Ultimately, no matter which of our favorite T-shirts you choose, we're sure you'll always have something to throw on, regardless of the occasion.

Here are the best T-shirt brands for women:

Updated on 10/22/2019 by Mara Leighton: Updated prices, formatting, and added Universal Standard. Included a few related links and replaced out-of-stock items. We are currently testing new products, so we'll update this guide soon.

The best T-shirt for women overall

The Universal Standard Tee Rex makes a slightly oversized, universally flattering fit for all women, with sizes ranging from 00 to 40.

Universal Standard has the greatest size range of the brands included on this list. Women sized 00 to 40 can find their perfect T-shirt among the brand's selection of shirts. And if you buy a piece from its Fit Liberty collection, the company will also replace your clothes for free if your size shifts either up or down within one year of purchase.

The Tee Rex, which is included in Fit Liberty, has it all: a slightly oversized fit, soft fabric, simple and well-designed silhouette, and comfortable for all-day wear. The shirt is soft and stretchy thanks to a combination of Peruvian cotton, modal, and elastane. A crew neck, curved hem, and lengthened sleeves give the shirt a drapey shape that lends some room to breathe without erasing your shape in fabric. It fits well at your true size, but you may consider sizing up for a looser fit or down for a more slimming one also.

Insider Picks reporter Remi Rosmarin said she "loved the feel of this fabric and the shape of the shirt— the curved hem is perfect for tucking into jeans. Ultimately, I probably would have sized up so the sleeves were a little looser, but that's all a matter of preference."

Pros: Soft fabric, drapes nicely, comes in many sizes, Fit Liberty will replace your clothes for free if your size changes within one year of purchase

Cons: Pricier, long fitted sleeves

The best box-cut T-shirt

If you're into a looser look and feel in your T-shirt, then Everlane's Box-Cut Tee is the way to go.

It's not easy finding a great white T-shirt. Some might say it's about as difficult as finding Moby Dick (though they'd be wrong). Enter Everlane, the direct to consumer brand that is reinventing the way in which we shop for basics. And that includes the white T-shirt, which we called the perfect white tee.

And the great thing about its Cotton Box-Cut Tee is that it's nothing like those super tight T-shirts you wore with your cut-offs in high school. Think of it as the grown-up T-shirt. It manages to be fashion-forward without being skin tight and looks great paired with either a mini skirt or a pair of jeans.

As the name suggests, the Box-Cut Tee features a slightly boxier fit than the basic Cotton Crew. Overall, it's just a little more relaxed, with a very slight crop that gives it a more updated look. It has an effortlessly casual feel to it, and a versatile silhouette that can be worn with quite literally anything. If you're into pockets, you have the option of purchasing the shirt with a chest pocket at no additional cost.

Thanks to its lightweight combed cotton construction, this shirt will get softer every time you wash it — and if you're as in love as we are, you'll wash it a lot — but the thread doesn't seem to wear out. Even if it does, Everlane has a seemingly neverending supply of these tees, so it won't hurt to stock up.

The pocket version of the tee is available in 13 colors total, including a bright white and slightly more ivory shade, while the plain tee is available in nine different colors and some striped patterns.

Pros: Affordable, versatile, comes in 13 colors, transparent production processes

Cons: Some customers have noted that the tee is a bit short on taller women

The best scoop neck T-shirt

James Perse makes some of the most comfortable clothing around, and its scoop neck T-shirt is no exception to the rule.

Alright, so this is a bit of splurge, but can you really put a price tag on comfort? James Perse, the company behind seemingly every Silicon Valley CEO's wardrobe (hi Evan Spiegel and Mark Zuckerberg) really does make one of the most comfortable T-shirts available. And just as Snapchat's founder and CEO has turned the brand's $60 v-neck into a staple item, you too can turn the James Perse Luxe Lotus Jersey Tee into a wardrobe mainstay.

The Lotus is a simple, effortless scoop neck shirt that seems to look good with just about anything. Round necks tend to be flattering for women with round faces, and the Lotus has a scoop neck that is low enough to be interesting, but not so low that you'll constantly be adjusting your shirt to hide your bra.

I'm particularly fond of this shirt throughout seasons. In the summer, the super lightweight nature of the garment makes it a great pair for a pair of shorts. But in the fall or spring, you can easily layer this item underneath an open shirt or a cardigan. As it so happens, I'm a sucker for anything heather grey, which makes this T-shirt a no-brainer for me.

The Lotus is made with 100% cotton, and is cut just short enough to ensure that you don't look sloppy even when it's not tucked in.

Pros: Beautiful scoop neck cut, very comfortable, great for layering

Cons: If you're not comfortable potentially spending $100+ on a shirt, then James Perse isn't the right place to look

The best V-neck T-shirt

Made with organic cotton and perfect when oversized, you'll want to wear Pact's great V-neck every single day.

I'm a huge fan of the products over at Pact. The brand makes clothing for both men and women and specializes in basics made with certified organic cotton that is super soft and super affordable. Also, Pact doesn't expect its shoppers to be rail-thin, and as such, the models showing off the clothing on its website look like real women, which is certainly refreshing.

One of my favorite items from Pact is undoubtedly the Featherweight V-Neck Tee. It's a slightly fitted shirt (as most v-necks are) that hits around the hips (a tad longer if you're a bit on the petite side). It's not so tight that you'll feel uncomfortable, but certainly capable of showing off your curves. It tapers towards the bottom, though, so you don't feel as though you're being sucked in.

The organic cotton, which is free of toxic dyes and pesticides, is super soft and naturally breathable, and because the shirt is prewashed, you won't have to worry about any shrinkage as you run it through the washer.

While I love this shirt in my normal size, it's also a great item to be worn a bit oversized. If you're into either a looser fit or want something that looks a bit more casual, you can always buy a couple sizes up.

Pros: Made of breathable, sustainably-sourced, organic cotton; super affordable; great fit

Cons: Limited color options

The best boyfriend-fit T-shirt

For the ultimate boyfriend fit, just buy the shirt someone's boyfriend would wear — specifically, the Driggs from Mott & Bow.

You can admit it. You bought your man that T-shirt from Mott & Bow not because you wanted him to wear it, but because you wanted to wear it. There's no shame in that. Sometimes, men's shirts are just a bit more comfortable, what with their extra roominess and ability to be worn as a slightly questionable dress. And if you're looking for a particularly comfortable guys-to-gals T-shirt, look no further than Mott & Bow.

Available as both a Crew Neck and V-Neck, the Driggs collection T-shirts are preshrunk, made out of 100% combed cotton jersey in Peru, and are available in five colors: white, heather gray, navy, dark gray, and black. The fit is, as the brand describes, "not too slim, nor too loose," which is perfect for days when you just want to wear a shirt and a pair of leggings.

The shirt is extremely soft, and like many of our other favorite picks, preshrunk to avoid any additional size issues after a few cycles in the wash. I particularly appreciate that the Crew Neck from Mott & Bow does not lose its shape over time. While other crew necks seem to gradually stretch out, the Mott & Bow tee looks just as it did when I first bought it.

One of my favorite things about wearing men's clothing is that it always feels a bit more substantial, and this shirt is no exception. While it's soft and comfortable, it's also a bit thicker without feeling heavy, which makes it feel higher-quality than many other basics in my closet.

The Women's Marcy T-shirt from Mott & Bow is equally great if you want a more feminine look.

Pros: Great materials, quality construction, preshrunk, basic color selection

Cons: As it's made for men, some women may not love the fit of this shirt

The best men's underwear

  • Underwear's one of those things many us guys don't pay much attention. You might not see it all that much, but you feel every bit of it all day long, every day.
  • Our favorite underwear comes from Saxx, whose proprietary -- and arguably revolutionary — "Ballpark Pouch" is designed to hold everything in place while keeping chafing, bunching, and perspiration at bay.

Gentlemen, if you've had trouble finding and wearing underwear you can bear, know this: You're not alone. Some underwear, such as certain briefs, can be a horrendous besiege on the groin and everything therein. But then again, more accommodating boxers can result in a bunched-up, tangled, and constrictive mess, too. Where, oh where is that enigmatic middle ground?

Men's underwear isn't the most exciting thing in the world to shop for, we get it. But what a nightmare it can be when you realize you've bought the wrong pair. Boxers? Briefs? Boxer briefs? Which is the right style for whom? The list goes on. Too compressive, to loose and bunchy, or poorly sewn seams that chafe and scratch, the horrors can be endless.

Newer brands like Saxx and Icebreaker are trying to change that with inventive new designs and new and improved fabrics.

Cotton, for many of us, will always remain king, but mostly because it's cheap. It rides up, chafes, and gets wet and stays that way, making the chafing even worse. There's Pima cotton (pricier stuff with longer, silkier fibers), bamboo, silk and wool, as well as Viscose, Lyocell, Tencel, and Modal (all natural-based fiber made from wood pulp), and so on.

Figuring out which fabric best suits you and your activities can be consuming — and expensive. We're here to help you cut through all, or at the very least some of that.

Here are our favorite men's underwear brands:

Updated on 10/21/19 by Owen Burke: The male contingent of Insider Picks is currently in the processing of testing and retesting a number of other popular underwear brands including MeUndies, Mack Weldon, Tommy John, with a fresh update coming soon.

The best underwear overall

Saxx, and particularly the brand's Loose Cannon fit, is the underwear for guys who hate underwear.

Saxx, an explicatively named underwear brand, has moved the ball forward ever so slightly for all of mankind with their proprietary "Ballpark Pouch" design, a simple-but-still-somehow-novel innovation that creates a pouch for, well, your pouch.

Designed to keep things in place, but not too firmly, the Ballpark Pouch is designed to reduce chaffing and perspiration while increasing breathability.

I tried a few pairs of Saxx out before I found one suited me. The first ones all felt like compression shorts, and while maybe breathable, felt uncomfortable and even stifling. Some people, whom I might venture to call masochists, seem to appreciate that. Maybe this is merely a personal preference, but such constriction, or confinement of any sort, just won't do for me. Then again, compared with regular cotton and other synthetic briefs (especially compression shorts), I readily concede that they were still far more comfortable.

The pair I've settled on continuing to wear is the "Quest Loose Cannon," which, as the name suggests, gives one's parts a room of their own, dubbed the "Ballpark Pouch."

Basically a cup with webbing on either side to keep things in place and apart from your thights, the "Ballpark Pouch" may be a bit silly where branding is concerned. But then so is "Saxx," at least in my book. If you can get past all that, along with the price tag (upwards of $25 a pair), then a whole wide world of breathable, featherlight boxers and briefs awaits.

Saxx is lauded by plenty of other publications: The Wirecutter, The Strategist, Gear Junkie, and Outside, for starters, and the brand's most popular style, the Vibe, enjoys a 4.2-star rating based on nearly 500 Amazon reviews.

Pros: Soft, lightweight, supportive "Ballpark Pouch"

Cons: Branding could be toned down a little, some models don't have a fly

The best affordable underwear for men

Where would we all be without Hanes, really?

Founded in 1900, Hanes, for all intents and purposes, pretty much invented modern underwear. Love or hate underwear, we'd have our work cut out for ourselves if we were to claim not to have some deep appreciation for this brand.

These days, Hanes offers every kind of boxer, brief, and boxer brief you could imagine with dozens of styles. Whatever it is you're after, the catalog offers everything from high-tech synthetic athletic to the good old-fashioned cotton the brand was built on.

The FreshIQ Boxer Briefs are the sort of timeless, tales, itch-free 100% cotton we all remember but updated with a little odor protection finish. Keep in mind that the solids are 100% cotton while the Heathers are a 75%/25% cotton and polyester blend.

Then you have flashier styles like the X-Temp, which are ultra-lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking all the way up to the waistband. These fare well under anything, but they really shine under gym shorts.

Around the web, you can take your pick of reviews but what we think stands out most is the 4.1-star Amazon rating based on nearly 3,000 reviews. This brand is timeless and it's not going anywhere soon. Plus, as some of the most affordable underwear you can buy, it's a good way to fill out your drawer when a five-pack is still cheaper than single pairs from the popular direct-to-consumer startups on our list.

Pros: Seemingly endless list of styles, affordable

Cons: Probably not the most sustainable underwear on earth

Shop all Hanes underwear at Hanes, starting at $5.99

The best odor-resistant men's underwear

Icebreaker has been producing some of the finest merino-wool-based layers around, so it's no surprise they're putting their expertise into underwear, too.

I recently wore Icebreaker's Anatomica Boxer Briefs on a two-day hunting and fishing trip with a buddy, and though we spent a good deal of time in close quarters, he didn't say a word. And trust you me, he's the type of guy who most certainly would, given the opportunity.

I suppose we're far enough down in this review that you're probably done reading by now, and so it must be safe now to state that I do not like underwear. But when you need it, you need it. This stuff from Icebreaker, though, really sold me. It's supportive but paper-thin, and somehow still wool-based. The result is a material so soft that you almost don't even remember you're wearing it. And, frankly, even after a couple of days, it doesn't smell like you're wearing it either.

But we shouldn't be the least bit surprised; Icebreaker is tops when it comes to covering up odor — which, by the way, is great when you're stalking big game (and/or trying to keep a safe distance from bigger game). I've also been wearing Icebreaker's thermal top layers, and with no wash at all over the course of a week of fishing, hiking, and hunting, smelled no worse for it. Even as temperatures rose and I began to sweat, moisture wicked and miraculously seemed to vanish, along with any trace of odor. The same went for the boxer briefs.

The only downside with Icebreaker's underwear is, as seems to be the growing trend in the men's underwear industry, a big brand label in large, almost block-lettered caps. Ah well, maybe I'm just too old, and it could be worse.

The brand has a commendable 4.7-star rating based on 160 reviews on REI's site, a place of esteem in its own right. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, camping, or just happen to sweat a lot, do you and yours a favor and try out a pair of these. You, and they, more so, will thank us.

Pros: Thin, supportive, breathable, odor-protecting

Cons: Oversized logo, though it could be worse

The best sustainable men's underwear

Danish brand Organic Basics is the Everlane of boxers and briefs (though they make a lot more than that).

Made with 93% recycled nylon and 7% (presumably virgin) elastane, Organic Basics estimates that compared with traditional methods using virgin materials, production of its "SilverTech" style conserves some 21 gallons of water and prevents 4.2 pounds of CO2 and one ounce of waste from entering the atmosphere and earth. We can't quite confirm this, but take a virtual tour of the brand's factories and learn more about its practices.

As for the product itself, the brand only uses Class A and B fibers, which means that even though this stuff is recycled, it's every bit as soft as brand-spanking-new stuff, and a lot less weight on the world.

SilverTech, which we find to be Organic Basics' most interesting style, is in fact infused with silver, which is supposed to quell odor and bacteria buildup. In our experience, it helps a good bit, but maybe not quite as well as others we've tried. The real win here is the comfort that these skivvies offer, and since I've had them (over a year now), they've easily been my most-worn pairs. A more relaxed boxer brief, they hold everything more or less in place while sitting flush so I can wear them with just about any pair of pants.

Organic Basics offers a couple of fabrics beyond their SilverTech, and unlike that line, they're much more on the organic side: Tencel (a wood-pulp-based cellulose that's more breathable and less shrinkable and wrinkle-inclined than cotton), and Organic Cotton (spiked with 5% of elastane).

Style-wise, if having a big logo or insignia of a brand front and center on your undies ain't your thing, this might be your go-to. I, frankly, am not a fan out loud logos on anything, and certainly not my underwear.

Around the world wide web, the brand hasn't received all that much recognition yet, but the good folks at the Strategist left the SilverTech line a radiant review.

Pros: More sustainable than your average skivvies, soft as can be

Cons: Some lines are a little on the pricey side

The best silk men's underwear

It might not be the most popular — or best — choice for everyday wear, but there's nothing like lounging around the house on Sunday morning in silk shorts.

We know what you're thinking, but hear us out. Silk boxers don't necessarily have to be that leopard print satin man hammock you wouldn't be caught dead in; there are plenty of toned-down options that at first glance, you'd never suspect were made of silk. But man are they comfortable.

We've all got to luxuriate at some point, and that's why, good sirs, we've all got to have a pair or two of silk skivvies in the roster.

When shopping silk boxers, know you're going to splurge a bit, but that's okay. You're not wearing these to work or for a day on the town. These are special occasion shorts, and you'll probably end up wearing (and appreciating) them most from the comfort of your couch.

Don't cheap out here, fellas. I repeat, do NOT cheap out. Poorly spun silk will end up in the graveyard after a few washes, and if you don't believe me, there's a whole slew of sup-par silk boxers with reviews from terribly disappointed customers on Amazon. Don't buy them.

Kick in an extra $30 to $50 for the real stuff (remember, you're not outfitting your whole underwear drawer with this stuff, just one or two pairs tops).

Derek Rose makes some pure, hand-made silk boxers in toned-down styles for which even your cruelest of friends could not immolate you starting at a reasonable $85. (Though, they do offer you the option to go a little wild if you please. We're not telling.)

Just remember: You have to be delicate with silk. Hand-wash only, and hang to dry. Again, you're only buying a pair of two of these, so you're not going to be hunched over the sink or tub for hours each weekend.

For some reason, there aren't a ton of reviews of silk underwear for men out there (maybe we're still not all that comfortable with our sexuality in 2019 after all), but Underwear Expert, the online authority in all things underpants, regularly features Derek Rose in their editorial section.

Pros: There's nothing softer than silk, handmade silk at that, whatever you chose, your SO(s) will appreciate it

Cons: Not breathable, and yes, the price tag, we know
